EGGER began in St. Johann in Tyrol, Austria, where Fritz Egger Sr. ran a sawmill. He saw value in wood waste such as chips, shavings, and sawdust, and in late 1961, he closed the sawmill to start a new type of production. On December 18, 1961, the first EGGER particleboard plant opened with 28 employees and a daily output of 30 cubic meters.

The company expanded in 1970 with a second Austrian plant in Unterradlberg. In 1971, EGGER began producing decorative-faced boards, moving beyond raw particleboard and opening the way for international customers. Its first foreign step came in 1984, when the company bought and rebuilt a particleboard plant in Hexham, Northumberland, in the United Kingdom.

Further expansion followed across Europe. In 1988, EGGER installed a Contiroll continuous press in St. Johann, doubling daily output. The group entered laminates in 1989 through Gifhorn, Germany, opened a plant in Brilon in 1990, and added sites in Bünde, Rion-des-Landes, Bevern, Barony, Wismar, Marienmünster, and Rambervillers throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.

Under Fritz and Michael Egger, the group continued to grow through large industrial projects. A plant opened in Shuya, Russia, in 2005, and EGGER invested 210 million euros in Rădăuți, Romania, in 2006. The same year, St. Johann began producing EUROLIGHT lightweight boards. In 2017, EGGER announced a $700 million U.S. plant in Lexington, North Carolina, which opened in 2020. Its main competitors included Kronospan and Swiss Krono Group, while EGGER remained family-owned.
