The Code Book - Simon Singh

This poor book had to wait a long time on my shelf, and maybe even lost hope about getting read once more. But then I decided to do my bachelor thesis with our cryptography group, and I remembered that I have once bought a book about cryptography. So I dusted off ‘The Code Book’ by Simon Singh.
I am really fond of these kind of books. Books which tell you about the origin story of inventions and discoveries.

The Defining Decade - Meg Jay

The Defining Decade by Meg Jay is exactly the type of popular self-help book I typically try to avoid. Nevertheless, I gave it a shot since I was at a crossroads in my personal life and in my twenties after all.
The book is structured into ‘work’, ’love’ and ’the brain and the body’. The work chapter contains no revolutionary information, but it was a nice reminder that most 20-somethings struggle with their early careers.

The (mis-)adventures of Edmond Dantès belong to my favorite stories of all time. So when I heard that the French have made a new adaptation of the classic by Alexandre Dumas, I needed to see it.
The directors Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de La Patellière expectedly decided to change some things from the book. They merged some characters into one and left some storylines and persons entirely out of the movie.

The Dip - Seth Godin

The main topic of Seth Godin’s 2007 book is quitting. The author argues that quitting is generally not a bad thing and that knowing when to quit and when to stick is a very valuable skill - a skill he will teach us readers in this book.
Core Concept: the Dip If It Is Worth Doing, There’s Probably a Dip.
Godin’s view is that every worthwile endevour features a ‘dip’ - a period of time where the first rush of excitement is over and you put in effort after effort seemingly without any benefits.

The Martian - Andy Weir

I read ‘The Martian’ after the more recent novel of Andy Weir, ‘Project Hail Mary’. And as in ‘Project Hail Mary’, I really enjoyed the scientific problem solving which the books of Weir are known for. These Books are maybe a little too sciency for the average reader, this is why I set the recommendability only to 7. I personally loved the book altough it had some lengths and was in my opinien not as suspenseful as ‘Project Hail Mary’.

I can recommend those films alone because of the stunning audiovisuals. You have to watch them on the biggest screen you have access to, and more importantly, the best soundsystem you can organize - the sounddesign is amazing and the music by Hans Zimmer even better! Storywise it was completely satisfactory and pretty close to the book. The acting was good too, Timothée Chalamet pulled the very challenging role of Paul Atreides off.

Recently seen for the second time, this time in IMAX. Grandiose genre-defining movie with great plot and great performances by all actors, especially Kevin Spacey. The only reason I do not recommend it to everyone is the disturbing and very graphically displayed murder scenes.
Rating: 5.0/5.0 Recommendability: 6.0/10.0

If you are even a little fascinated by applied sciences and not completely turned off by ‘science-fiction’ you will love this book.

Uhh another sleeper. I bet most people have never heard of Buddy Levy’s ‘River of Darkness’, which is a shame because this is one of the most fascinating reads ever for me. It’s about the (mostly ?) true journey of Franciso de Orellana - a spanish conquistador - who is probably the first human being to sail the full length of the Amazon. His journey began with the typical quest to conquer and claim: I think his mission initially set out to gather the valued cinnamon-tree.

Rory Sutherland is always a treat to listen to on podcasts - such a creative mind. His book ‘Alchemy’ does not disappoint either: A very entertaining and thought provoking read essentially about the shortcomings of the rationalist mindset and the underappreciation of the creative approach.
Here are my notes about the book from 2023:
Psycho-Logic and Reasoning This book argues that reasoning is often overrated and that we should rather solve problems in the psycho-logical way.

This is (controversially) my favorite book of Taleb. It was the first piece I read from him and I really enjoyed it. If you don’t know Nassim Taleb: you will either hate him or love him, he is a very polarizing figure. Anyways, this book is about systems which gain from adversity, like biological systems for example. If you punch a window it will most certainly break because its fragile. If you punch a rock it will not change and you will potentially break your hand - it is robust.

I recently moved to a new apartment. First things first, of course I had to setup a new homelab. More compute, more space, better networking. Initially I planned on buying the performant ‘Minisforum MS-01’. However, ram-prices have since skyrocketed and I could not justify the cost of this setup. Instead, I looked on the second hand market and found the following:
Proxmox Server Setup HP Prodesk 600 G5 8 x Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9700 CPU 32 GB Memory 1 TB nvme (~ CHF 400) Additionally I will install the two SSDs from my old server:

On the 7th of July 2025 I finally finished my BSc-thesis and with this my bachelors degree. The thesis investigates if and how a certain kind of cryptographic signature scheme - the BBS signature scheme - can improve privacy in digital identity systems such as the Swiss E-ID. Here is the abstract:
Abstract The digital transformation of identity systems holds the potential of making identification not only more convenient, but also more secure and privacy-respecting.

For an upcoming exam I need to memorize a lot of genus and species names. Normally I would have written down each question/answer pair by hand and learn like this. However, on this occasion I had neither the time nor the will to take this approach. Instead I teamed up with AI (for speed) and drafted a little python script which (1) searches for quiz files in the working directory (2) lets you choose which files you want to go through (3) goes randomly through the questions of the files you chose in step 2.

Why is there (so much) biodiversity? This is a good question. Why are there so many similar species in a homogenous environment such as trees in a tropical rainforest? This is an even better question, and one which was probably asked by every ecologist since the beginning of ecology. The neutral theory of ecology is not actually about answering these questions. Rather, it is about preventing the existing hypotheses from being fooled by randomness.

How I Added Self-hosted Comments on my Website

As you may have noticed, my website is heavily inspired by Derek Sivers. On his site, he has a comment section under every post which he implemented himself using PostgreSQL and Ruby. I always found this feature really cool, but couldn't get myself to do the work and implement it on my server as well - until now. I decided to "sit together" with claude.ai and implement my own comment section.

If you are not using a rolling release distro, it can sometimes be frustrating to depend on more or less outdated software. Mostly, I don't care about the newest and shiniest thing. I could not care less if I use this or that version of libreoffice. But sometimes it can be nice to use something newer. In my case, I use the emacs text editor (doom) a lot. The version available with apt is 27.

Setting up this Website with Emacs Org-mode

⚠️ This post is no longer current. I switched to using md-files and generating the site with HUGO.
The HTML files which make up this site were automatically generated by EMACS Org-Mode's publishing function. As a total beginner with Emacs I wanted to share my struggle creating this website so other people - maybe you - can learn from my mistakes.
Why use ORG-Mode? Today there are a lot of (easy) ways getting your Website online.
