Static (Japanese: せいでんき Static Electricity) is an Ability introduced in Generation III.
Effect
In battle
Generation III
When a Pokémon with this Ability is hit by a move that makes contact, there is a 1/3 chance that the attacking Pokémon will become paralyzed. This can affect Ground-type Pokémon.
If a Pokémon with this Ability is hit by a multistrike move that makes contact, each hit has an independent chance to activate this Ability.
Generation IV onward
The chance for Static to paralyze is lowered to 30%.
Outside of battle
From Pokémon Emerald onward, if a Pokémon with Static is in the first place in the party (even if fainted), then there is a 50% chance the game will force an encounter with an Electric-type Pokémon, if one is possible. As of Pokémon Sword and Shield, it shares this effect with Lightning Rod.
Generation VIII
In Pokémon Sword and Shield only, this chance is 51% instead.
Generation IX
In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, this Ability has no effect outside of battle, with its former field function effectively being replaced by Meal Powers.
Pokémon with Static
- In the Generation V games, Zapdos has Lightning Rod instead of Static as its Hidden Ability, but it cannot be obtained by any legitimate means.
In other games
Pokémon UNITE
In Pokémon UNITE, Static is Pikachu's Ability. It slows down all enemies nearby by paralyzing them for a short time when receiving damage. This Ability goes on a 30s cooldown after it's triggered.
