‘Zootopia 2’ Overtakes ‘Lilo & Stitch’ to Become 2025’s Highest Grossing Movie With $1.13 Billion
Image
Rabbits and foxes and snakes, oh my! “Zootopia 2” is officially the highest-grossing Hollywood release of the year. Disney’s animal-packed animated sequel has earned a staggering $1.13 billion globally after 20 days of release, overtaking the haul of Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” remake with $1.03 billion. A non-Motion Picture Association (MPA) film, China’s animated blockbuster “Ne Zha 2,” remains 2025’s biggest release with $1.9 billion.

Another Disney juggernaut, James Cameron’s epic “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” could contend for the 2025 crown — considering its predecessors were $2 billion-grossing sensations. However, the threequel opens on Dec. 19 and will likely earn the majority of its money in the following calendar year.

On Friday, “Zootopia 2” surpassed the $1 billion mark after 17 days in theaters, the quickest PG film to achieve the milestone. The sequel stands as the seventh-biggest animated film in history, outpacing the original 2016’s “Zootopia” ($1.025 billion globally) and last year’s “Moana 2” ($1.06 billion).

LaKeith Stanfield
Lakeith Stanfield is set to play NBA legend Dennis Rodman in Lionsgate’s “48 Hours in Vegas,” taking over the role after Jonathan Majors was dropped from the film following his 2023 assault conviction.

The upcoming comedy is “inspired by the untold story of Dennis Rodman’s legendary trip to Las Vegas during the 1998 NBA Finals — just as the Rodman’s Chicago Bulls are on the verge of completing their second consecutive threepeat championship in eight years,” according to a release.

Rick Famuyiwa will direct “48 Hours in Vegas” and write the next draft of the screenplay, following an earlier draft by Jordan VanDina.

The film will be produced by Lord Miller’s Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Aditya Sood. Executive producers include Ari Lubet, Rodman and Lucy Kitada, with Nikki Baida serving as co-producer. Image
Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” (2023), the epic chronicle of greed and murder in the Osage Nation, is getting a physical media release from the Criterion Collection. The film is among five titles in the March slate, which also includes Lynne Littman’s “Testament” (1983), Claude Lelouch’s “A Man and a Woman” (1966), Tsui Hark’s “The Blade” (1995) and Luis Buñuel’s “Viridiana” (1961).

Hitting shelves on March 24, Scorsese’s adaptation of David Grann’s true-crime bestseller unfolds in 1920s Oklahoma, where the discovery of oil brings extraordinary wealth to the Osage people. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Ernest Burkhart, an Army veteran who joins his duplicitous uncle, played by Robert De Niro, in a scheme to rob the Osage of their money and land. Lily Gladstone, the first Native American nominated for best actress at the Oscars, plays Mollie Kyle, Burkhart’s wife, who gradually awakens to the evil surrounding her.

12 Historical Miniseries You Need To Watch
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Period dramas on the big screen can deliver a variety of compelling stories, but to fully immerse yourself in the world of the past, sometimes a miniseries is exactly what you need, giving the story plenty of time to breathe. At the same time, they're not going to overstay their welcome either — they're like the Goldilocks of narrative fiction, not too lengthy, not too short.

Long considered a mainstay of prestige television, the advent of streaming services have made historical miniseries more accessible than ever. Whether they're immersive World War II dramas, stories of medieval England, or explorations of more modern periods,...

An Acclaimed Remake Of An '80s Cult Classic Sadly Flopped At The Box Office
Image
Critical acclaim and name recognition only gets you so far. That's what Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting had to come to terms with over the weekend as their new remake of the '80s cult horror classic, "Silent Night, Deadly Night," flopped at the box office in its debut. Most unfortunate of all, director Mike P. Nelson's take on the franchise was met with a great deal of acclaim, but it still couldn't cut through the noise.

"Silent Night, Deadly Night" opened to just $1.1 million on over 1,600 screens, making for an unfortunately lousy $682 per-screen average. It actually did worse than Disney's newcomer "Ella McCay," which opened to just $2.1 million, itself...

Batman Reimagined The Frankenstein Story Long Before Guillermo Del Toro
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

With 2025's "Frankenstein" Guillermo del Toro made some major changes to Mary Shelley's original story, most of which were for the better. The gloriously gothic monster movie was a triumph for the celebrated filmmaker, reinvigorating a well-known story and proving that Shelley's original tale remains as versatile and flexible today as it ever was. Long before del Toro achieved such a feat, however, DC comics had a go. With the 1994 one-shot "Batman: Castle of the Bat," writer Jack C. Harris and illustrator Bo Hampton ostensibly reworked the "Frankenstein" story as a Batman comic, but what ended up happening was...

Waking up in a mysterious glass chamber inside a huge, abandoned castle, the Time Lord has to navigate the vast compound in search of clues that might reveal the nature of his predicament. However, he's not alone: A large, cloaked figure (Jami Reid-Quarrell) is chasing him, and he can only temporarily halt it by offering secret truths about himself. The USC Libraries have named the 2026 finalists for their 38th annual Scripter Awards, which honor the year’s most accomplished adaptations of the written word for the screen. The It: Welcome To Derry's Strangest Moment Pays Homage To A Classic Movie Villain
Image
This article contains spoilers for the season 1 finale of "It: Welcome to Derry."

The "It: Welcome to Derry" season 1 finale opens with Pennywise the Clown (Bill Skarsgård) singing a catchy tune to some school children — a classic jingle about wanting to eat their faces. Afterward, Pennywise uses his powers to lure the kids out of the school and into his cart for the real nightmare to begin. It's a strange, horrifying, and downright creepy sequence — and it might make viewers think of a certain villain from one of the best musicals of all time.

In Ken Hughes' "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," children are tormented by the evil Child Catcher (Sir...

Rob Reiner Directed Movies with the Skill of a Craftsman and the Soul of an Artist
Image
When Rob Reiner died at the age of 78, American movies lost not only an actor, producer, and director who was universally beloved by almost everyone in the industry and everyone who watched him (around 30-40 million people during the heyday of his hit series “All in the Family”), but one of the last practitioners of a certain kind of Hollywood filmmaking.

An unassuming craftsman who sublimated his ego to the demands of the subject matter and genre at hand, Reiner was nevertheless a deeply personal filmmaker. Like Howard Hawks, John Ford, and other masters of the classical studio era, his style was often invisible, but his modesty cloaked the intense engagement of a true artist.

Reiner was one of those filmmakers who was weirdly both widely celebrated and a bit underrated — he made what he did look too easy to be ranked with the greats when people who do such things were doing the ranking.

Emma Mackey's New Movie Delivered One Of Disney's Worst Box Office Openings Ever
Image
Disney is having a very good year at the box office thanks to massive hits like the $1 billion smash "Lilo & Stitch" and under-the-radar successes like "Freakier Friday." But they can't all be winners. Unfortunately, director James L. Brooks' ("As Good as It Gets") long-awaited return to the director's chair was decidedly not a winner, as "Ella McCay" flopped badly in its debut. How bad was it? Well, it now ranks as one of the worst opening weekends ever for a Disney movie.

Starring Emma Mackey ("Barbie"), "Ella McCay" opened to just $2.1 million on 2,500 screens for a terrible $840 per-screen average. That's in the same territory as the John Cena and Allison Brie vehicle "Freelance,...

Sundance Reveals 2026 Short Film Lineup for Final Utah Year
Image
The Sundance Film Festival is rolling out the lineup for its landmark 41st edition, where organizers and attendees will bid farewell to the festival’s founder, the late Robert Redford, and its longtime home of Park City, Utah.

After announcing the feature and episodic program last week, on Monday, the Sundance Institute revealed this year’s substantial lineup of short film selections. The 54 films in the short program, which include fiction, nonfiction, and animation titles, hail from 22 countries and territories across eight categories. And as usual, the selections represent both established and emerging filmmakers, many of whom will be in attendance for the world or North American premiere of their films.

In the nonfiction category, shorts transport viewers to an outsider community on the edge of the Mississippi River in New Orleans (“Some Kind of Refuge”), the days following Luigi Mangione’s arrest (“Luigi”), and a therapy collective in 1970s...

Netflix Hires Dani Dudeck as Chief Communications Officer (Exclusive)
Image
Netflix has appointed Dani Dudeck as chief communications officer.

She starts on Jan. 12 and will report to co-ceo Ted Sarandos. Netflix’s prior Cco Rachel Whetstone, who was hired in 2018, departed the post in March. Dudeck is joining Netflix from Instacart, where she serves as chief corporate affairs officer. She’s also held posts at Zynga and MySpace.

Dudeck’s hiring comes amid Netflix’s $82.7 billion bid to buy Warner Bros. Sarandos and co-ceo Greg Peters have reiterated to employees that they feel “confident” that Netflix will get the regulatory approvals — and fend off Paramount’s hostile, all-cash counter-bid — that are needed to cinch the mega deal. Although Netflix has pledged to “to maintain Warner Bros.’ current operations and build on its strengths,” including theatrical releases for films, the closing of this deal would dramatically reshape the future of the entertainment industry.

10 Best Characters In The Knives Out Movies, Ranked
Image
Spoilers for all the "Knives Out" mysteries follow.

The year is 2019. Two years prior, Rian Johnson had strangely become one of the most polarizing directors in Hollywood as a result of his work on "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," a film hailed by critics as a high-water mark in the troubled franchise's history but ultimately so divisive among fans that it gave "Star Wars" an identity crisis that the brand still hasn't fully recovered from. Whether you loved or hated the film, however, most would agree that Johnson had succeeded in one thing: subverting audience expectations.

Naturally, he took this storytelling instinct away from the galaxy far, far away and...

The world was absolutely shocked by news late on December 14, 2025, revealing that writer, director, actor, and producer Rob Reiner — alongside his wife of 36 years, Michele Singer — was found dead in his Los Angeles home. The circumstances surrounding Reiner's passing at 78 are, as of this writing, difficult to discuss, largely unconfirmed, and wholly gruesome; a man who produced some of the most emotionally resonant films in cinematic history deserved a gentler ending, to say the least. I'm not here to discuss the intricacies of Reiner's death, though. I'm here to talk about his legacy, particularly as a director.

Now, Reiner was also an actor who had the ability to make...

Image
Disney’s animated sequel “Zootopia 2” continued to tower over the Korean box office, delivering $6.7 million from more than 1 million admissions over the Dec. 12–14 frame. According to Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council, the film now stands at a commanding $35.2 million cumulative gross since its Nov. 26 debut, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the weekend’s total market share.

The film drew 140,352 admissions across 768 screens, remaining the strongest Korean performer in the chart. Directed by Ha Jung-woo and starring Gong Hyo-jin, Kim Dong-wook, Lee Ha-nee and Ha Jung-woo himself, the film follows a downstairs couple driven to exhaustion by constant noise from their upstairs neighbours. How To Watch Glen Powell's The Running Man At Home
Image
The Year of Stephen King Adaptations is finally drawing to a close, having given acolytes of the acclaimed horror author four very different adaptations to work with and culminating in perhaps its most crowd-pleasing one of all — if only those crowds had bothered to show up, of course. "The Running Man" seemed like it had everything going for it: fan-friendly director Edgar Wright behind the camera, rapidly-rising star Glen Powell as the lead, and even the blessing of King himself. Unfortunately, tepid reviews (including /Film's own Chris Evangelista) and lukewarm audience responses combined to sink this highly-ambitious venture before it ever really got going.

But, as with any high-profile flop,...

‘Zootopia 2’ Leads Again as China Box Office Crosses $7 Billion

China’s box office was once again led by Disney’s “Zootopia 2,” which grossed RMB390.3 million ($55 million) over the Dec. 12–14 frame, lifting its cumulative total to RMB3.55 billion ($500.6 million), according to Artisan Gateway.

The animated sequel comfortably held the No. 1 position, accounting for the bulk of a weekend that continued to be dominated by holdovers and locally produced titles further down the chart.

Daylight Entertainment’s “Gezhi Town” remained in second place, adding $10.2 million in its second weekend for a running total of $43 million. Directed by Kong Sheng and written by Lan Xiaolong, the film tells the story of displaced civilians who, after the fall of Nanjing during wartime, resettle in a remote mountain town near Yichang only to find peace shattered when Japanese forces arrive. Paul Thomas Anderson’s counter-culture thriller scores nine nods, ahead of Hamnet and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, with Leonardo DiCaprio in contention for actor of the year

One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, has consolidated its place as the awards-season leader in emerging with the most nominations from the London Critics’ Circle film awards.

Al Pacino
Heat at 30: Michael Mann’s electric crime thriller is a film of fire and sadness
Al Pacino
Al Pacino and Robert De Niro’s dueling performances add an extra punch to the 1995 masterpiece which is both action-heavy and deeply tragic

Consider the hype leading into Heat when it hit theatres 30 years ago today. Here was Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, two legends the movie’s trailers flexed by their rhyming last names only, both masters of their craft who, much like their characters, had been watching each other from a distance, sharing the screen for the very first time. The pent-up anticipation was built right into the narrative, which patiently delays the onscreen face-off between Pacino’s dogged homicide detective Vincent Hanna and De Niro’s...

‘One Battle After Another’ Sets HBO Max Release Date
Image
“One Battle After Another” will soon become available to watch at home. The Paul Thomas Anderson movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio will debut on HBO Max on Dec. 19.

Starring DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Teyana Taylor, Regina Hall, Benicio del Toro and Chase Infiniti, “One Battle After Another” follows a washed-up revolutionary who must save his teenage daughter after she’s kidnapped by a merciless army officer. The film is loosely inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel “Vineland.”

After premiering on Sept. 26, “One Battle After Another” received huge critical praise for its story, direction and performances. It’s expected to be a major Oscar frontrunner at next year’s awards show and recently picked up an industry-leading 9 nominations at the Golden Globes, including best picture.

In Variety’s review, chief film critic Owen Gleiberman called “One Battle After Another” a “mesmerizing vision of a police-state America” and praised Anderson for delivering “the kind...

How Walton Goggins Brought His Beloved Fallout Character To The Video Games [Exclusive]
Image
Life seems to be pretty good if you happen to be named Walton Goggins. The acclaimed character actor not only has recent hit shows like "The Righteous Gemstones," "The White Lotus," and the upcoming second season of "Fallout" under his belt, but he's also unquestionably one of the main highlights in each of those. He'll next reprise his role as the fan-favorite The Ghoul (aka Cooper Howard) in one of the best video game adaptations around, though that's not his only radioactive appearance worth keeping an eye out for these days.

In a fun twist, Goggins recorded lines and lent his likeness to The Ghoul for the latest update on the 2018 "Fallout 76" game,...

2025 Critics Poll: The Best Movies of the Year, According to 148 Critics
Image
Sometimes film critics just know what they like. And when you have a consensus fave like the #1 film of the 2025 IndieWire Year-End Critics, they can’t hold back. In fact, the #1 film of the critics survey is the very same as the #1 on IndieWire’s own in-house Best Movies of 2025: “One Battle After Another,” with 101 of the 148 critics who voted in this year’s survey having it somewhere on their Top 10 ballots. Not to mention that 43 of those 101 mentions were #1 picks.

That’s a far higher percentage of overall mentions and #1 placements than even last year’s winner, “Anora,” received. And while there was a split decision last year, with Brady Corbet topping our survey for Best Director for his extraordinary work on “The Brutalist,” this year “One Battle” director Paul Thomas Anderson took Best Director honors as well.

What’s remarkable about such praise for one film is...

‘The antithesis to Nazi ideology’: how Pippi Longstocking was born to stand up to Hitler
Astrid Lindgren
A new documentary explores how Astrid Lindgren’s beloved children’s books about the pigtailed free spirit were written in response to the darkest days of the second world war

She’s the mischievous little red-haired Swedish girl with the pigtails. Since 1945, this waif with no mother or father has rarely been out of the bestseller lists and continues to inspire musicals and movies. Heyday Films, the outfit behind Paddington and James Bond, is now developing an English-language adaptation of her stories.

What isn’t generally known outside her native Sweden are the circumstances in which author Astrid Lindgren created Pippi during the darkest period of the second world war,...

How Stephen King Really Feels About Rob Reiner's Misery Adaptation
Image
Legendary filmmaker and sitcom actor Rob Reiner has died at 78, an incredibly tragic loss for us all. Reiner rose to prominence as a director with his 1984 cult mockumentary, "This is Spinal Tap," and went on to helm a slew of Hollywood classics, including "The Princess Bride," "When Harry Met Sally," and "A Few Good Men." Such genre variety should be indicative of the director's incredible ability to tell powerful stories without being constrained by rules or conventions. This sense of flexibility is reflected in his treatment of two distinctly different Stephen King stories — "Stand by Me" and " Misery" — that tap into worlds that couldn't be more dissimilar.

While Reiner's "Stand By Me...

Oscar Isaac Tells Teyana Taylor ‘You’re the Coolest Person I’ve Ever Met’ as They Bond Over ‘Frankenstein,’ ‘One Battle’ and Their Most Difficult Scenes
Image
Oscar Isaac and Teyana Taylor both embrace morally complicated and deliciously outsize roles this year. In Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” veteran actor Isaac plays a version of the titular doctor who, in this telling of the classic Gothic tale, beats and chains up his creature creation (Jacob Elordi). And in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” Taylor — a recording artist and choreographer whose dramatic-acting breakthrough came as a heartbroken single mother in the 2023 indie drama “A Thousand and One” — catalyzes the movie’s chaos as the ambiguously motivated, possibly traitorous Perfidia Beverly Hills.

Oscar Isaac: When I first saw “A Thousand and One,” I was so blown away. I was like, “Where did this person come from?” It was such a well of emotion — it felt like, “I don’t even think she knows there’s cameras on.”

Teyana Taylor: I had just retired music and was like,...

Jafar Panahi’s 2021 Short ‘Life’ Is a Reminder of More Than Just the Director’s Talent — Watch
Image
There are all kinds of ways to run an Oscar campaign, but perhaps one of the most effective — and respectable — is reminding voters just how deserving a potential nominee is by resurfacing their past work and highlighting their contributions to the industry. That seems to be Neon’s strategy with Jafar Panahi, the dissident Iranian filmmaker behind the complex, Palme d’Or-winning revenge thriller “It Was Just an Accident.”

With awards season ramping up, the studio just announced that it’s making Panahi’s 2021 short film, “Life” — which was originally released as part of the Covid-era anthology film “The Year of Everlasting Storm” — available to audiences via a free online release.

The 20-minute short, which opened the omnibus, captures with touching specificity a moment when Panahi’s mother comes to visit him and his wife during the pandemic, and then ends up forging an unlikely bond with the director’s pet iguana.

Castle Rock (2018)
From Seinfeld to Shawshank, Rob Reiner changed Hollywood for ever
Castle Rock (2018)
Reiner’s own films reshaped modern comedy and drama with their intelligence, empathy and range. But through his company, Castle Rock, he paved the way for Seinfeld, Sorkin and many more

News: Rob Reiner found dead in apparent homicide

Gallery: Rob Reiner – a life in pictures

Meeting Reiner was like a visit from Santa

As a film-maker, Rob Reiner championed humour, civility and intelligence – qualities you suppose would be out of step with the Hollywood of the 1980s where he made his name, and in the 1990s where he scored a series of extraordinary, far-reaching successes. Reiner had a family interest in the workings of on-screen comedy: his father Carl...

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in Twilight (2008)
Tell Me Softly review – high-school romance of bad boys and blurred boundaries
Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in Twilight (2008)
Social-media fame and sexual intrigue collide in this part-Twilight, part-oc romantic drama whose provocative dramatic set-ups feel as glib as porn scenes

Here is a Spanish YA romance based on a novel by Mercedes Ron, famous (or perhaps notorious) for the My/Your/Our Fault saga. This time, we have Kami (Alícia Falcó), a confident, attractive cheerleader at her local high school with a huge following on social media, and an angry jock boyfriend who is none too pleased when her attention wanders towards a couple of handsome brothers who have just begun attending the school. Younger brother Thiago (Fernando Lindez) is in the same year as Kami, while...

The Pluribus Stunt You Had No Idea Zosia Actor Karolina Wydra Actually Did
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Pluribus."

Rhea Seehorn's Carol Sturka might be an unconventional protagonist in "Pluribus," but hivemind mouthpiece Zosia (Karolina Wydra) emerges as the perfect foil. While the hive doesn't believe in hierarchy, Zosia is chosen to make Carol feel at ease, as she resembles the pirate heroine in her fantasy novel's first draft. This strategy works to an extent, as Carol's abrasive nature is somewhat softened around Zosia, even though she represents a collective and is unable to claim personhood.

At one point, Zosia helps Carol bury her lover, Helen (Miriam Shor), by efficiently using an excavator. In an interview with Collider, Wydra revealed that she...

Little House On The Prairie: Whatever Happened To Albert Actor Matthew Labyorteaux
Image
Matthew Labyorteaux played Albert Quinn Ingalls on "Little House on the Prairie" from 1978 to 1983, after which he appeared in one of the continuation TV movies. But the fate of his character remains somewhat of a mystery. Similarly, many fans of the show might be wondering what happened to Labyorteaux himself. Luckily, the actor has been working fairly consistently since "Little House on the Prairie" went off the air.

The series remains one of the best Western TV shows ever made, even if it is one of those hit '70s series that audiences don't quite remember today. Labyorteaux joined during the fifth season as the adopted son of Charles (Michael Landon...

One Of The Most Divisive Horror Directors Ever Almost Wrote An Indiana Jones Movie
Image
If there's one constant involved in franchise filmmaking, it's that every sequel that gets made leaves behind at least one alluringly alternate iteration. After all, who wouldn't be curious what "Alien 3" would've looked like had William Gibson written it, and hey, what if Quentin Tarantino actually had made a "Star Trek" film? While these can be fun fantasies and thought exercises, ultimately one needs to adopt an "everything happens for a reason" mentality regarding unmade sequels in order to not get too heated. Still, there's no stopping one's mind from reeling with visions of what might have been, especially when the combination of franchise and filmmaker is so tantalizing.
