Vince Kane
- Vince Kane: [pulling up in front of hotel] I'll go up with ya.
- Police Lt. Nick Ferrone: Why don't you stay out here and neck?
- [Elaine is also in the car]
- Vince Kane: Not with the top down.
- [Vince Kane can be seen entering his office. As he arrives, he takes off his hat as he sees a woman sitting down. This is Lucy Brackett. With Brackett is another man, this is Roger Lennert]
- Vince Kane: Hello, Lucy.
- Lucy Brackett: Hello, Vince.
- [Lennert stands up and shakes Kane's hand]
- Roger Lennert - Lucy's Attorney: Mr. Kane, I'm Roger Lennert, Mrs. Bracket's Attorney.
- Vince Kane: [returns the handshake] How are you?
- Roger Lennert - Lucy's Attorney: It's about Mrs. Brackett's husband. You don't know him, do you?
- [Kane hangs up his hat before heading over to his desk and sitting down]
- Vince Kane: No, not personally.
- Roger Lennert - Lucy's Attorney: I see. Well, uh, he was arrested late yesterday afternoon.
- Vince Kane: I know.
- Roger Lennert - Lucy's Attorney: Are you aware of the circumstances, Mr. Kane?
- Vince Kane: I think so.
- [Vince Kane can be seen speaking with Joe Farley, the latter who has just finished a conversation on the telephone]
- Joe Farley: Mr. DA says no.
- [Farley stands up from the desk he's sitting at]
- Joe Farley: Your pal Ferrone asked for the high bond. Now the DA's gotta summon him. What do you want me to do?
- Vince Kane: I want the guy sprung.
- Joe Farley: Vince, I don't know what your interest in this is. I'm not asking. We're still partners. I'm taking no risks. If those people can't twenty-five thousand, forget it. Understand? Forget it.
- [Vince Kane can be seen knocking on the door of the apartment of Lucy Brackett]
- Vince Kane: Lucy.
- [inside, Lucy can be seen approaching the door]
- Lucy Brackett: Yes?
- Vince Kane: It's me, Vince.
- [Lucy opens the door]
- Lucy Brackett: Please go away, Vince.
- [Vince enters the apartment]
- Lucy Brackett: Oh, Vince. Why did you bother to leave your card?
- Vince Kane: I don't like unfinished stories. Like the one that started on a Tuesday night, a year and eleven months ago. That dumb cop waited for hours for a girl who didn't show.
- [Vince Kane can be seen speaking with Lucy Brackett in the latter's apartment]
- Lucy Brackett: I've always wanted to tell you, Vince. There was so little time.
- Vince Kane: Tell me now, but make it good. Especially the part about the husband.
- Lucy Brackett: [annoyed] Don't say it like that! Why don't you give me a chance?
- Vince Kane: You know a better way to say it?
- Lucy Brackett: I can only say it the way I know it. Claude and I were separated. We'd even arranged about a divorce. After that, I was on a bus one night, coming home from Ventura. The bus broke down, I walked along the beach of the man I'd never known before. We hitched a ride together, and we talked.
- [in her apartment, Lucy Brackett can be seen speaking with Vince Kane]
- Lucy Brackett: What'll we talk about, Vince?
- Vince Kane: [takes off his hat] Not about Claude.
- Lucy Brackett: [emotionally] I couldn't! It was too soon! Besides, I'd never met anyone like Vince Kane before.
- [Vince Kane can be seen speaking with Lucy Brackett in the latter's apartment]
- Lucy Brackett: Vince, can you understand how a girl gets married? Claude was a boy... who... taught me to swim and took me to dances. He fell in love with me and married me, as simple as that.
- [Vince remains silent]
- Lucy Brackett: That's supposed to solve everything for a girl, isn't it?
- Vince Kane: It's been known to.
- Lucy Brackett: Yes, it's supposed to for me, too.
- [in her apartment, Lucy Brackett can be seen speaking with Vince Kane]
- Lucy Brackett: I told myself I was in love with him. Then one day, I discovered I hadn't married a man at all, but a boy who was terrified when his father died and left him without a bank account.
- Vince Kane: [sarcastically] Very touchy.
- Lucy Brackett: Yes, it was. A little more than touchy. The night you waited, was the night Claude came back to me. Terribly scared and drunk. He said he'd been framed, police were after him, we had to get away quickly, there was no time for any explanations. What's the use of it, now?
- [in his office, Vince Kane can be seen shaking hands with Matthew Dawson]
- Matthew Dawson: Mr. Kane, I'm Dawson.
- Vince Kane: Hiya.
- Matthew Dawson: I'm representing Mrs. Claude Brackett.
- [Dawson hands Kane a card, who takes and looks at it before going to sit down at his desk]
- Matthew Dawson: Have you heard anything about the case?
- Vince Kane: Oh, we manage to know what's going on.
- [at a club, Vince Kane can be seen dancing with Lucy Brackett. As they are going this, someone at a nearby table happens to notice Vince. This is Wally]
- Wally: Hi, Vince. How's my favorite bondsman?
- Vince Kane: Hello, Wally. Don't drink too much.
- Wally: [smiles] Just one for the road.
- Vince Kane: [smiles in return] Okay, you know the office is open twenty-four hours a day.
- [at a club, Vince Kane can be seen dancing with Lucy Brackett]
- Vince Kane: You like it here?
- Lucy Brackett: No, it's too plush.
- Vince Kane: You belong in soft things.
- Lucy Brackett: [smiles] Not necessarily.
- [Vince Kane can be seen talking to a woman handling some cigarettes]
- Vince Kane: What kind of a guy is this Brackett?
- Cigarette Girl: What kind are there? Just have to have a better pedigree.
- [Vince Kane is speaking with a girl handling some cigarettes]
- Vince Kane: You liked him?
- Cigarette Girl: [smiles] Don't get any ideas, I don't carry torches. He was a nice fellow. He spent a lot of money,
- Vince Kane: You see him when they picked him up?
- Cigarette Girl: Yeah, I saw him. But I have an allergy about trouble. It makes my fingernails break off. That's why we said goodbye.
