Lady Ochii • Princess Chiyo
- Jutaro [Jurota] Karibe: Chiyo! Open your window, and show me your fair self. And your dark eyes that are like twin pools.
- Lady Ochii aka Princess Chiyo: No. You do not love me anymore.
- Jutaro [Jurota] Karibe: My love for you grows ever deeper. You accuse me wrongly, and I am crestfallen.
- Lady Ochii aka Princess Chiyo: Why, I...
- Jutaro [Jurota] Karibe: My heart aches with love for you. And I only live for the moments I see your dear face.
- Heihachiro Komaki: [whispering to Jurota] "Were I a mirror."
- Jutaro [Jurota] Karibe: Were I a mirror, you would look at me, and I'd whisper my love.
- Heihachiro Komaki: Good!
- Lady Ochii aka Princess Chiyo: Why, Jurota!
- Lady Ochii aka Princess Chiyo: We both have our old wounds. I have mine here. An old wound, but forever new. A paper stained with blood and tears.
- Heihachiro Komaki: Ahh... his letter? You promised me that you might let me read it.
- Lady Ochii aka Princess Chiyo: You really wish to?
- Heihachiro Komaki: Yes, I really do, today.
- [Lady Ochii removes Jutaro's letter from inside her kimono and hands it to Komaki]
- Lady Ochii aka Princess Chiyo: Here, then... read it.
- [Komaki begins to read Jutaro's letter - the words of which he, Komaki, had actually written]
- Heihachiro Komaki: Farewell, Princess Chiyo, for today I die. Nevermore will my eyes follow my lady's graceful movements. And so memories must suffice. And I recall again your endearing ways. My heart is heavy...
- [He chokes up but continues reading]
- Heihachiro Komaki: for I must die and leave so much of my love unspoken.
- Lady Ochii aka Princess Chiyo: [visibly moved] The way you read it!
- Heihachiro Komaki: Farewell, paragon of gentlewomen.
- Lady Ochii aka Princess Chiyo: [recognizing the voice from ten years earlier, in the garden outside her window] That voice of yours!
- [the letter falls from Komaki's hands, but he continues reading, since he himself wrote it and knows the words]
- Heihachiro Komaki: Waking and sleeping, my thoughts were ever with you. And though I end this mortal life, my love will never change.
- Heihachiro Komaki: I am going to journey alone to that dim and distant moon. Death has come for me. Very well, I'll go to welcome you.
- [Heihachiro's spirit exits his body]
- Heihachiro Komaki: Death! Staring at my nose, are you? Look and laugh if you will. I will fight to the last! I'm different from others. There are a thousand of you. But I'm alone. I can't fight a thousand men. Fool! I'm not a coward. I'd win in a fair battle! You intend to strip me. Strip me of my valor, my success, and my wit if you can. Let's see you do it!
- [he strikes with his sword and reawakens in his body]
- Heihachiro Komaki: But I don't need anything anymore, so take it all. Empty-handed, I journey to the moon. I take only what I hold most dear, unstained and pure.
- Lady Ochii aka Princess Chiyo: What is that?
- Heihachiro Komaki: It is my undaunted spirit.
- [last lines]
- Lady Ochii aka Princess Chiyo: Do you remember the old days?
- Heihachiro Komaki: The old days?
- Lady Ochii aka Princess Chiyo: Yes, you were always getting hurt here and there.
- Heihachiro as a child: Mother, I am bleeding. Please bandage it.
- Ochii as a child: Why, child, you've hurt yourself again. Naughty.
- Heihachiro Komaki: [they laugh] That's right.
- Lady Ochii aka Princess Chiyo: Even at this age, you're still the same.
- Heihachiro Komaki: It was just child's play.
