    A Mixed Bag

Susan Bracken takes a camping trip to the Canadian Rockies with her father, George Barrows. There, she and handsome rancher Tab Hunter capture a mustang called Hacksaw. Hacksaw in unridable, but otherwise pretty calm, so he is trained as a packhorse and, eventually for the Calgary Stampede Chuckwagon Race.

Director and co-writer Larry Lansbugh demonstrates his usual mix of strengths and weaknesses. He's got a great eye for scenery and animals in motion, but his dialogue direction is weak. While the more skilled actors -- including narrator Ray Teal -- do well with their lines, some of the minor players sound very stilted.

The print that I viewed on TCM last night showed some artifacts from its origins, including some distortion from its original TV showing -- the 550-line scan is evident in several shots. On the other hand, the color is brilliantly saturated, showing what wonders Technicolor could provide, even as other producers abandoned it for the cheaper and less stable chemical processes.

    Inoffensive, but very forgettable

It's interesting to compare the family movies the Disney company made decades ago with what they typically put out nowadays. A movie like "Hacksaw" would almost certainly never be made today. It's missing a juvenile touch for the most part, for one thing - its tone is pretty sober and serious, and seems more aimed at adult viewers instead of children. (There are also no child characters, at least with any dialogue.) But its more mature viewpoint comes at a price, that price being that the movie is kind of slow and dull for most of the running time. None of the characters have to face really challenging (and essential) tasks - if they were to fail at what they have to tackle, you can see that they would just shrug off the experience and move on. Naturally because of this, it's kind of hard to get involved with the lead characters. The movie is never slow or dull enough to be really painful to watch, but there's also no particular reason to watch it. If you do, the memory of watching it will quickly evaporate from your mind not long after it reaches its end.
