    Slow Build-up

A minor disagreement gradually develops into a seemingly doomed relationship.

On the face of it, this play looks like a lot of other domestic dramas of the time: well-to-do middle-class couple in London, married for years and the relationship has staled. But the performances by the lead actors have a wonderful complexity about them. The husband's in particular takes you from a quiet indifference to some seemingly out of character flashes of emotion that come from nowhere.

While the pacing might be a little slow to start, it does develop as the play goes on, concluding in a marvelous twist right at the very end.

The cast is top-notch, and the stand-out performance for me was Clive Swift as the bachelor next door, who is the antithesis of the main character.
