Derek is a new pupil who's been well educated back East. Sara sees that Derek is at odds with the frontier children because of his wealthy but bellicose father and his thirst for learning. Sara tries to help the Derek fit in.

An epidemic has hit the town of Independence, overwhelming Doc Vaughn. Sara and the other healthy citizens try to help but it takes the daughter of the former physician to make a difference.

Sara encounters Henrietta, a elegant woman who has chosen isolation, shutting herself away from her neighbors. But Sara attempts to befriend her and sees the arrival of a piano in town as a chance to end the woman's loneliness.

Sara's student Harvey has an abusive home life and he steals a horse to get away. When caught the youth is sentenced to hanging as horse theft brings the death penalty. Sara finds herself alone as she tries to get Harvey a reprieve from the gallows.

Sara falls for a man who has the dangerous job of a handling dynamite in the mines. Her friends try to warn her the romance will only bring her heartbreak but headstrong Sara remains optimistic.

The lack of available single women in Independence makes Sara a likely bride in the near future. The town fathers convene and agree to discourage any suitors. Sara is outraged when she learns of the meddling in her personal life.

Lily finds an ally in her daughter's teacher, Sara Yarnell. Outraged at Mrs. Henchard's plight, Sara intervenes, both to help repair the relationship between mother and child and to vindicate Lily before her husband can engineer her recommittal.

Thirteen year old Jenny is one of Sara's smartest students and seems to have a promising future. Jenny informs her teacher she's leaving school to marry a ranch hand. And the eastern born Sara finds it hard to fathom.

With school not in session, the disappearance of Sara causes little concern as the town thinks she left for Denver. Achille, an uncouth mountain man, has abducted Sara and taken her to his isolated cabin.

Sara's brother Peter arrives in Independence and tells her his wife Louise is gravely ill. Peter asks Sara to return to Philadelphia to care for his children anc spouse and he'll sign over his inheritance. Sara is torn about her future.

Sara meets a feisty young girl and her ailing grandfather who own a mine. After the elderly man dies he leaves his granddaughter in Sara's custody and joint ownership in the failing ore venture that the teenager is determined to operate.
