The Luckett family leaves their home in Pennsylvania and heads west; with her mother ill and dying, eldest daughter Sayward takes charge of the family and helps build a house and make it a home.

While Sayward marries and starts her own family, a town builds up around them; after some years she makes a decision that has serious consequences.

Sayward and her family become wealthier materially but she stays the same strong-willed and level-headed matriarch. As her oldest offspring start marrying and starting their own families, she sharpens her focus on her youngest.
