Predates "Speed" and Is The Much Better Drama...
`Bullet Train' (Orig. Title: Shinkansen Daibakuha) is a gripping thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Made in 1975, `Bullet Train' predates Jan De Bont's similar `Speed' by almost two decades and is the vastly superior drama. The wonderful Ken Takakura portrays the bomber with a grudge, while cult action star Shinichi `Sonny' Chiba portrays Shinkansen (Bullet Train) operator Aoki who must find the explosive device before his train explodes. Utsui Ken (who portrayed the serial hero Super Giant/Star Man) also puts in a great performance as Transit Chief Kuromochi who must not only deal with the demands of the bomber but must also deal with the political and public backlash and hysteria that ensues the crisis. While some of the SFX work does not really look all too convincing, the overall film is a joy to see. Ken Takakura's somber and tragic character of Okita is quite a contrast to Dennis Hopper's wacky and cartoonish villain in `Speed". While the film is not great, it certainly is worth a look. Blink and you could miss the cameo of Shihomi Etsuko as a transit telephone operator.
It's Classic,but very exciting.
I watch this movie in DVD. This movie was produced before I am born, I was very exciting this movie. Because this movie music is good. It cannot believe that it is the old movie. Ken Takakura who is performed to this movie is the actor whom I like most. Because He is the greatest actor in Japan. His performance is very groovy. I knew him with the "Black rain" Because as for the reason where I looked at this movie, he was performed.
Even aft almost 50 years of its release I enjoyed it.
This movie made 20 years before Speed has only 13 reviews while Speed has more than 500 reviews. Of course I am angry cos this is much better than Speed.
The villain in this one is better than Dennis Hopper. The background stories of the terrorists/villains r very well done in this movie compared to Speed.
Note that one has to see the 150 mins version of this movie.
I saw this for the first time recently n that too almost 50 years of its release n still enjoyed it.
Surprisingly Sonny Chiba got a very miniscule role. He doesn't get to make his weird constipated facial expressions in this one nor does he gets to fight anyone.
This movie inspired many movies -Speed, Runaway Train borrowed few elements, The Bollywood offspring The Burning Train borrowed some elements n another Bollywood offspring Tezz directly copied it.
Even Michael Mann's Heat borrowed few elements, the last airport scene n the wife called in to spot the guy.

Enjoyable Japanese Train movie
I think this is a pretty good movie that I watched. The story is good with a maniac put a bomb onto a train and the train have to keep going or it will explode if it slow down. It brings in tension with the train staff need to keep the train going inorder to keep the bomb from exploding. There's also investigators trying to find the guy who put it in the first place. It's a good investigation plotline with them trying to find him and doing task that he told them do to. But there's a lot of time that they fail at capturing the guys and makes the movie pretty predictable. Also, Tetsuo Okita doesn't want anybody to died from the bomb which isn't explain well enough. The movie has a couple of chase scenes that are enjoyable to watch, but it results of them failing to captured them. And the way the movie ends is abrupt.
Bullet Train is a enjoyable movie that has good tension to it.

Awesome Japanese thriller in the best American style
Far better for me than a simple SPEED aboard a train scheme, this is a tremendous thriller where characters are very well depicted; I speak of the Long version of two hours and thirty minutes; not the short one. Ken Takakura outstanding in this villain character, and also the lead one. This is tense, gritty, very unique in the Japanese film industry which looked like a disaster Hollywoodian movie for this period. The good Hollywood side, not the lousy one that we had later, in the eighties and nineties. I highly recommend it to anyone who could be afraid because it is a film from Asia. Try this one, who ever you are, you won't regret it.
