"Swan Song" was first shown as a TV movie on 8 February 1980 and stars David Soul, Jill Eikenberry, Slim Pickens, Murray Hamilton, John Van Dreelen, and JoAnna Cameron.
The plot is very familiar: individualistic, determined, and I-don't-take-nonsense-from-anyone champion skier (Soul) comes to town for the big race. Along the way are friendly old men, romantic jealousy, and professional rivalries before the big race. Guess who wins?
You've seen this movie before, you've just seen it with a different cast, in a different year, and set in a different location. The basic plot dates back to silent film days. If you're a fan of David Soul--and I suppose that there are still a few out there--you might enjoy this rather threadbare 42-year-old TV film. I found it familiar to the point of being tiresome.

One more film about ski, but instead of Bob Redford, you have David - Hutch - Soul. You will find in this TV feature the usual scheme of sport, former champion, comeback, love story, and of course rivalry between champs, and not only because of sport. No real surprise, but if you love mountain in winter, ski, etc, you will love it, or at least appreciate this pure family and home entertainment. Amusing, the trivia lines above. Of course I did not notice the Michael Mann's sentences, although I saw all of the HEAT director's films. David Soul is convincing in the main role. And Slim Pickens a moving character.
But everything is predictable, I warn you. Perfect Sunday afternoon entertainment for the whole family.

- TriviaJesse's (David Soul) line "They haven't invented the hard time that I ain't prepared to handle" is almost exactly the same as Beedan's (Dennis Haysbert) line "There ain't been a hard time invented that I cannot handle" in Heat (1995), also written by Michael Mann. A variation of the line is also found in The Jericho Mile (1979) when Murphy (Peter Strauss) says "Are you gonna tell me they invented a hard time you can't handle?" The Jericho Mile was also written and directed by Mann. The line is also used by Gina (Saundra Santiago) in an episode of Miami Vice (1984) (Give a Little, Take a Little (1984)) and by Julie Torello (Darlanne Fluegel) in the pilot episode of Crime Story (1986); both shows were executive produced by Mann.
