Fred Ward deserves more attention as an actor...he did a great and believable job in this movie! (I especially like that part where he's asked where he got that map...he say's "got it at an EXXON Station") Peter Coyote was awesome!. What a bad BAD guy he was! and Belinda....WOHOO!....now that's a hot woman!, she can Rape me at gun-point anytime she wants! (ehh...don't tell my wife I said that!)
Timerider is a fun movie to watch. It's a good movie to watch with kids on a rainy day. Some of the content is a little adult, but not over the line. It's not a billon dollar pick, but it has some nice special effects. You will see some familiar faces when they were young, and the acting they really tired. I liked the movie, and hope it sparks the fire that leads someone to become a "timerider". I would not say run out and buy it, but if someone has a old VHS of it, watch it! I think even hardcore si-fi fans like me will get a kick out of it. Maybe its just me, but I thought the soundtrack was pretty good. It fit the mood of the movie. Only downside is there is a lot of rerun footage.
The following comment includes a piece of the plot. If you plan to see the movie (and I recommend you do), do not read the rest of this.
Both Gene and Roger felt that the title character seemed stupid in that he didn't understand what had happened (i.e. that he went back in time) until the very end. I, on the other hand found it most believable. If you were lost in the desert, and you came across a _rural_ town, wouldn't it take quite a lot before you'd reach the conclusion "Oh, I must have gone back in time!"

Suspend yourself for a time. Watch motocross goat roper style.
Lyle Swann (Fred Ward) rides his bike off-road and by accident back a century. There he encounters Some bad characters including Peter Coyote and Ed Lauter who covet his machine and a woman Belinda Bauer that covets his... well, not his bike. Will he come out of both encounters unscathed? Does he ever hear the truth of his situation or will he be lost forever "a stranger in a strange land?"
Maybe not the best production. However, it is quite fun watching them go through the motions. It is fun to see top actors from different films all come together for this one. You may find out what happened if you stick your nose into the situation.

Timerider was one of the first movies I ever saw on video back in 1983 (when renting a video was a "new" phenomenon). The movie was pretty good. However, the music was unforgettable. I later discovered that Michael Nesmith (of The Monkeys fame) wrote the music as well as had some involvement with the production of the movie.
The sound is pure 80's with the punchy and familiar distorted electric guitar. Occassionally, a synthesizer will appear on the track. When I rented the movie in 1983, I recorded the music (along with some of the dialogue) onto an audio tape... which I still listen to today. Fortunately, I also discovered that Michael Nesmith has a web-site where both the video and the soundtrack can be found. I think I'll purchase both... since it has been nearly 20 years since I've seen the movie.
This is a classic movie for the music alone.

- TriviaLyle Swann goes back in time to November 5th, 1877. The same "time travel arrival date" was used in Back to the Future (1985) (November 5th, 1955) and Time After Time (1979) (November 5th, 1979).
- GoofsAfter Reese is mangled by the chopper's tail rotor, we get another full shot of the aircraft as it lands to pick up Lyle. However the rotor section looks undisturbed and void of any human flesh. It should be blood splattered (as in a bird strike) as it just destroyed a full grown human being.
- Quotes
Porter Reese: You shot it. What a bunch of dumb sons of bitches, you *shot* it! A *machine* - you butt-heads!
- Crazy creditsDuring the opening credits,a voiceover of a scientist at a press conference explains the timerider project and what they plan to do.
- Alternate versionsIn the original theatrical release, Porter Reese was so distracted by the destruction of the motorcycle that he did not notice the approach of the helicopter's tail rotor until it was too late -- there was a scream, a splattering sound, and a shot of empty gore-drenched boots. For the Anchor Bay DVD release, the shot was replaced with a shot of motorcycle wreckage on the ground and a pickup shot of Reese cowering; the audio, however, was not changed. The original sequence is preserved in the laserdisc release as well as the more recent Shout! Factory Blu-ray. The Spanish DVD release preserves the boots scene but entirely omits the sequence where Swann scares the old man to death.
