There is a sequence near the end where Benten's hired spaceship's warp drive malfunctions and catapults the occupants into hyperspace, which features advancing walls and swirls of colour, along with closeups of the colours reflected on Elle's face and eyes, in a very close parody of the famously psychedelic sequence in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Shutaro Mendou receives an invitation to Ataru Moroboshi's wedding. When Mendou's servant brings him the letter, he delays reading it for him, in a verbal exchange identical to the one between Jodo and the Count

when Ataru is about to marry Elle, one of the guests in the church is a huge robot with a Greek letter on the forehead, just like the robots in "Albegas"

The scene where Lum interrupts Ataru's forced marriage by pounding on the window of the church and shouting "Darling" is a nod to the iconic and often-parodied wedding sequence in The Graduate.

There is a scene onboard Lum's father's ship where an Oni soldier is trying to retrieve what he thinks is a cat out of the alien taxicab by meowing, only to be attacked by Rose. This parodies a scene in Alien where Brett attempts to find Jones the cat by meowing, only to be attacked by the alien.

The first appearance of Princess Elle in the bath is directly taken from the Clash of the Titans, when princess Andromeda leaves the bath.
