Teacher Trevor Chaplin orders some Bix Beiderbecke records from a platinum blonde raising money for the cubs unfortunately the records turn out to be duds. His friend Jill Swinburne is standing in the local elections as a Conservationist.
Sgt. Hobson takes Big Al, Little Norm and Jill into custody. Jill refuses to be a witness against the pair but gets a chance, for her and Trevor, to visit them at the church. Sgt Hobson starts an investigation by following Trevor and Jill.
Trevor gets his records. A greenhouse is smashed. A dead cat and a hangman's noose. A bomb doesn't explode. A super grass. A church is raided. A meeting is canceled. But Helen of Tadcaster turns up.
Helen takes Trevor to visit her father but he is used to getting his own away and demands Trevor drops his unsuitable friends. Mr. Pitt, from planning, gives Jill files, on the McAllister's businesses, and she passes them to Sgt. Hobson.
