I remember this being watched by my parents and them enjoying it thoroughly and me being to young to appreciate it for what is was. Now that we have internet tv sites I found all 6 seasons on 9NOW and thought to see what they saw in it. A true classic of quality Australian comedy with a real charismatic flavour dispite the dark element of Maggie's dementia.
With solid performances from well loved 70's comedic actor Garry McDonald and Ruth Cracknell, a celebrated actress named in 1998 by the National Trust as one of Australia's top 100 national living treasures. This show epitomized the classic Australian style comedy (even if it is forgivably a tad cringe worthy at times) and (generally lol) wholesome prime time entertainment that will stand the test of time.
If you like classically witty Aussie style comedy then this is the one for you. You could even get your money's worth by purchasing the box set on DVD and relive the zanyness as if it were for the first time again and again at your leisure!

I watched this when I was young and it was one of the best comedies i'd seen. Its got wit and its well directed with a great cast. Sadly, Ruth Cracknell who played Maggie died of Respiratory complications on the 13th of May, in Australia, just last night. A great actress who'll be remembered for a long time.
Rest in peace, Ruth.

"A comedy about dementia" For anyone who has had to cope with a parent or grandparent who is 'losing it', this series of half-hour episodes will certainly lighten their burden.
I LOVE this Mother and Son sitcom! I first discovered it on a PBS station back in the mid-upper 80's. I love BBC comedy sitcoms, but THIS "Australian" sitcom (1984-1994) is BETTER (or equal) to any I've seen. (I own dozens) I cant stop thinking about it, and I can't wait till they release it in DVD for USA. WHATS THE HOLD-UP? Its been TEN YEARS now since the sitcom was over. And I haven't seen a single episode since the 80's. I'm always checking Amazon.com for future release info. as well as other searches and I come up empty. Do we all have to rally and send a petition or something to the writer/creator to get the 42 episodes released or what??
Anybody else have a clue? Its kind of the same situation for a very funny BBC sitcom called "One Foot In The Grave" (check it out) Thanks, Karla

As an ever new Australian I still found this show one of the most adorable, enjoyable, funny and intelligent show that was ever produced. It does nothing new, just highlight the facets of human nature. But it does it in a way that only Norman Guston could have done it!
I seem to have heard that he was the only fictional character to get an academy award,,, And to my view it was so deserved.
So all I have to say with the negative comment which appears on the imdb page now, is that his author should get a 'band aid' out of Norman Gunston's face and put it accross his mouth (or around his writing fingers)!
It's just a, not so, simple story about a middle aged man living with his aging mother...
