References

    • The Third Man (1949)

John Glen had previously worked in the sound department for 'The third man' (with Guy Hamilton, another Bond alumnus, as assistant director) and includes at least two references to the older film in the Vienna-set parts of 'The living daylights'. Both have a key scene set in the Prater ferris wheel; in the Bond version, Necros (posing as a balloon salesman) approaches Bond with the words "Ballon, mein Herr?" ("balloon, Sir?"). Towards the climax of 'The third man', Major Calloway and Sgt Paine are pestered by an elderly balloon salesman with these very same words; the latter is played by Bernard Lee, the original M in the Bond series.
    • Dr. No (1962)

    • Carry on Spying (1964)

Shares a number of story elements with the James Bond movie The Living Daylights (1987) made twenty five years later. They both have major settings in Vienna, Austria; North Africa and England. This film has a setting in Algiers, Algeria whereas the Bond film has a setting in Tangiers, Morocco. They both feature an enemy agent invading an English intelligence facility utilizing exploding milk bottles. They also both feature a dummy stand with a coat and hat as a camouflage trick.
    • Goldfinger (1964)

Updated version of the Aston Martin / 25th Birthday series homage
    • Enter the Dragon (1973)

Bond style villain has a mini historical military museum at his lair/residence.
