Rip's Twenty Years' Sleep

When watching these Rip van Winkle segments out of context, one must realize that each one is really only a very tiny fraction out of what the original intent of the storytelling was. So it's pretty impossible to judge this very brief, twenty-second snippet on its own. Beginning from where "Rip's Toast to Hudson and Crew" left off, this sixth installment of Dickson's serial picks up after Rip has drunk a mysterious brew from the ghosts of Henry Hudson's crew. Almost immediately he appears dazed by the liquor's impact, and falls to the ground. The crew then ducks from view as Rip gestures wildly before losing consciousness completely.

Again, when viewed out of context it's hard to find much to say about this on its own. One interesting thing is that just as the film is about to end you can see one of the Hudson crew, who is apparently supposed to still be out of sight, getting up from his hiding place near the edge of the screen. It's apparent that he hadn't gotten the heads-up that the camera was still rolling. The director probably had a bone to pick with him later for screwing up the film.
