Apollodorus
- Apollodorus: [Caesar has been murdered] Come, we must go! We must escape! They will kill you! Think of Egypt!
- Cleopatra: Think of Egypt? Always Egypt! But Caesar is dead! My emperor!
- Apollodorus: That dream is gone.
- Cleopatra: Gone. Yes, gone. What do I care for empire now? Caesar is dead! My lover is dead!
- Apollodorus: He didn't love you.
- Cleopatra: You lie!
- [whips Apollodorus]
- Cleopatra: You lie! You lie!
- Egyptian Messenger: [to Cleopatra] Royal Egypt, Caesar is dead!
- Apollodorus: How was this? By whom?
- Egyptian Messenger: I don't know, but I heard them cry, "Brutus, Cassius!" As I got off through the streets I heard them shout, "Caesar is a traitor to Rome!"
- Cleopatra: Where is he? Where is Caesar?
- Egyptian Messenger: Dead, Majesty. The body lies at the foot of Pompey's statue. No one will touch it.
- Cleopatra: I will.
- Apollodorus: [sees Cleopatra wearing a bejeweled gown with a large cape] I never saw anything so beautiful!
- Cleopatra: Let me show you.
- [poses]
- Cleopatra: How do you like this?
- Apollodorus: Gorgeous!
- Cleopatra: Or do you like this?
- [poses a different way]
- Apollodorus: [laughs lightly] I am only a man. How can I tell?
- Apollodorus: [to Cleopatra, about Caesar] It wasn't in his arms he wanted to hold Egypt. It was in his treasury.
- Charmion: It's true. You were blind. He didn't love you.
- Iras: You were blind. Blind!
