Going' to Heaven on a Mule is worse than nearly all the Warner "Censored 11" cartoons

Just discovered on the Misce-Looney-ous site linked to YouTube this rare Warner Bros. cartoon short directed by Friz Freling that's NOT on the "Censored 11" list. Based on the final number in the Al Jolson picture Wonder Bar, this cartoon is awash in offensive stereotypes of African-Americans like having one take to drink constantly and another one automatically eat a watermelon and a few more automatically playing dice in Heaven which here is called Pair-O'-Dice (Paradise, get it?). And their faces all resembles monkeys, aaarrrggggg! The only thing that's remotely entertaining here is the title number which doesn't surprise me since Freling often made good musical cartoons. So for that alone, this cartoon gets two stars, otherwise I'd only recommend this for Warner animation completists.

    This short was good.

Great animation and great music like always. People might get offended by what black people looks but to be honest. My people do have big lips and big noses. That's not a bad thing to get offended about. Black people picking cotton and smiling now that's bad. But over all the short is harmless. Alot of these shorts that "offended" are really just harmless and shows what was going on at the time. If this was a live action movie people would praise it for how accurate it was or doing something that is like fiction and nonfiction. But just because it's a cartoon we have to get offended by it. To be honest I'm not and this is coming from an Afro person.

    An Honest Review

Since previous reviews written for the short weren't well received, this review will be more reliable.

It's shocking to know that this isn't in the Censored Eleven because this is actually more offensive than the ones that made the list, the only reason why this cartoon isn't is because its not apart of the AAP package, but rather the Sunset package. Because its overshadowed by the Censored Eleven, it didn't gain much recognition and as it had its copyright renewed, it didn't get a physical media release, but its surprisingly available on YouTube.

But talking about the short itself, its more offensive than any Censored Eleven cartoon as mentioned before and I can definitely see why. All characters are blackfaced and features very offensive imagery like with using a watermelon as a harmonica and gambling.

The storyline is rather poor and is unintriguing, even if you take the stereotypes out. The cartoon is also slow paced and isn't funny at all. I guess the animation is the only redeeming quality and the social views from 1934 are considered outdated now, making it unintentionally racist? But I don't think this cartoon is worth your time especially with its offensive imagery. I'm honestly okay that this is forgotten about because this is one of the most offensive and boring WB cartoons of all time, at least the Censored Eleven, while offensive, have interesting stories and have better pacing while this one isn't interesting at all. So yeah, unless your a completionist, please avoid it. Its not worth your time.
