    Silly...very silly.

The opening credits are pretty cute and many of the folks in this short film go by their own names. Interestingly, Arthur Lake (Dagwood from all the Blondie & Dagwood films) plays opposite his sister, Florence...and the film says they are brother and sister. He's a pretty normal enough guy...Florence talks non-stop and is deliberately annoying.

The film itself is about the big competition between State Univeristy and Dale. And, it all ends up resting on the shoulders of Arthur! There's lots of silly singing and the classroom scene is reminiscent of the Marx Brothers' film "Horsefeathers". Silly but enjoyable.

I just saw this short for the first time on TCM

I have watched many shorts from the earlier days of Hollywood, but this one was surely the most entertaining I have seen. Florence Lake (who is a new face for me) was quite a phenomenon ... Fanny Brice ... Gracie Allen!! My thought was that she must have died young because I had never seen her (like we did her brother Arthur as Dagwood). Now I discover that she was a working actor until her death at 75. 139 movies! And so much TV work ... and I must have seen her on Superman, the Lone Ranger, or Petticoat Junction! Wow ... fame! Wonderful dance numbers and good songs ... Florence's "Springfield" number could be used by Blossom Dearie. I loved the girls' basketball number and I really cannot say enough about the "Springfield" song. Don't know who wrote it but "cheers" for them too.

    Pretty Impressive for 1934

Considering athletics, esp. women's basketball in 2005 vs. 1934, it was very interesting and entertaining to see what 1934's take on the subject was. College girls playing hoops in 1934...Marsha Sharp it ain't! This short is certainly worth a look, it is well written and clever, and you'll get a special kick out of the cheerleader squad scene. We've come a long way, Baby.

It is, after all, a short, so no need to pop the popcorn. A quick and entertaining piece, it is difficult to write too much about a film that is less than 20 minutes long without telling the whole story. Suffice it to say that the Brother/Sister duo of Authur Lake (you'll remember him from "Blondie and Dagwood" series of movies) and Florence Lake are delightful. Hearing "Dagwood" do a song and dance number is, in of itself, worth the viewing.
