      Circonstances Atténuantes

Ulcer-ridden hanging judge Edward Everett Horton and wife Gladys George go on a vacation for his nerves. Their plans fail to come off when they find themselves in a den of thieves. The thieves, however, mistake him for a big, lone-wolf operator and ask for his help. He decides to help them to be honest.

It's a remake of Jean Boyer's CIRCONSTANCES ATTENUANTES and I regret to inform you that is a much better movie, because of Michel Simon in the same role as Horton; as much as I enjoy Horton, no one is a better comically monstrous performer than Simon. However, the character is rewritten for Horton, and he offers his usual excellent comedy performance. So by all means enjoy this, but see if you can find the other movie.

Two worlds collide at the robber's den

Judge Webster sentences a known offender the maximum 10 years for stealing a car. He is soon to be confronted by that decision when he tries to hide his own identity at a robber's den. Circumstances leads him there when he needs to take shelter on a stormy night. He finds himself wined and dined by a gang of small-time criminals. Overhearing the gang's verdict of his court decision, he eventually questions his own judgement. Also he sees a chance to put these small-timers back on the right path. It's a comedy of two worlds colliding where opposites are thrown together. Edward Everett Horton and Gladys George play well together as the judge and his wife. This was their only collaboration. I also enjoyed Paul Herst playing their host at the robber's den. He was mainly in Poverty Row westerns so this may be the first time I've seen him.
