Solid Classic Film
This is a very nice Christmas classic, one that didn't do well at box office and was largely forgotten until AMC began showing it a couple of decades ago. It is now shown annually as part of TCM's annual Christmas marathon.
While Ann Harding is very good as Aunt Mathilda, with her makeup she resembles Ethel Barrymore; making me wonder if the latter had originally been considered for the part. I think Ethel Barrymore would have been spectacular here.
A huge star in his time, but overshadowed these days by Bogart, Cagney, and Robinson, George Raft stands out in this as the gangster among Mathilda's adopted sons. Randolph Scott and George Brent play the other two. Joan Blondell reminds us her that she was a sexy woman before she aged and became a legendary character actor.
I give this 8 stars and recommend it as part of anyone's Christmas classic movie viewing.
