Quotes17

  • Brad Dunham: I want a pack of American cigarettes.
  • Hotel Cigar Stand Clerk: Sorry, but we're all out.
  • Brad Dunham: How much are they when you're all out?
  • Hotel Cigar Stand Clerk: Ten dollars.
  • Brad Dunham: How do you know I haven't got a gun?
  • Mme. Tamara Baranoff: Because your clothes fit you much too well.
  • Brad Dunham: It's plain to see you haven't got a gun either.
  • Brad Dunham: Is anybody around here the umpire? Well, I can't say that I blame you. If it's all right with both sides, I'll call 'em as I see 'em.
  • Chinese Boy: Thank you. We have the utmost confidence in your judgment as the arbitrator, sir.
  • Brad Dunham: It's plain you didn't play in Brooklyn.
  • Brad Dunham: Nice girls aren't supposed to talk to me much less be seen with me.
  • [In a hotel room, Brad Dunham finds a letter for him. As examines it, he starts to read it]
  • Brad Dunham: Dear Brad, sorry about this, I've had all I can take. Maybe heaven isn't... to particular... about who they let in. Best of luck... to the last of the old gang. Steve.
  • [Upon finishing the letter. Brad looks up at a nearby photograph to see a few of his fellow airmen. He picks up a marker and crosses off Steve's image before turns and sits down. After thinking for a few seconds, he picks up a telephone]
  • Brad Dunham: [speaking into the phone] Desk clerk, this is Dunham. Mr. Ellis has already checked out. You'd better send the coroner up for his bags.
  • [Dunham solemnly hangs up the phone]
  • [In the hotel, Brad Dunman can be seen walking up to the front desk, where a clerk is working.]
  • Brad Dunham: Can I have the bill for 33?
  • Hotel Desk Clerk: [Turns and around and picks up a piece of paper, which he hands to Dunham] Here it is. 376 dollars, American money.
  • Brad Dunham: Kinda high, isn't it?
  • Hotel Desk Clerk: Mr. Ellis has been charging many things to your account for some time.
  • Brad Dunham: What of it?
  • [Dunham holds up some money, which he hands to the clerk]
  • Brad Dunham: Here, stamp that paid.
  • Hotel Desk Clerk: [Takes the money and the bill before stamping the latter, which he then hands to Dunham] Here you are, sir.
  • [Dunham takes the bill and starts to walk off.]
  • Hotel Desk Clerk: Oh, uh, Mr. Dunham.
  • Brad Dunham: [Looks up] Yes?
  • Hotel Desk Clerk: We should be requiring your room.
  • Brad Dunham: [surprised] What?
  • Hotel Desk Clerk: The management regrets, that it requires you and Mr. Ellis to move tonight.
  • Brad Dunham: You can't do that. Mr. Ellis is sick and you can't put a sick man out in the street.
  • Hotel Desk Clerk: If I may say so, Mr. Ellis' sickness bears a curious relationship to whiskey.
  • Brad Dunham: Whatever you got against me is okay, but lay off him.
  • Hotel Desk Clerk: We want the room tonight.
  • [the clerk turns and walks off as Dunham starts to think about what he heard.]
  • [while flying a plane, Brad Dunham can be seen speaking into a microphone]
  • Brad Dunham: Hello? Hello? Playing Minnie calling Good Time Charlie.
  • [a shot of the plane flying through the clouds is seen]
  • Brad Dunham: Playing Minnie calling Good Time Charlie. Over.
  • [Brad Dunham can be seen helping Linda Parker serving some food to some Chinese children]
  • Linda Parker alias Linda Arnold: You mustn't mind them.
  • Brad Dunham: I don't. I was a kid once myself.
  • [Linda smiles as she continues prepping the food for the children]
  • [At night, Brad Dunham can be seen alone. At some point, Linda Parker comes into view]
  • Linda Parker alias Linda Arnold: Brad.
  • [Brad turns around and looks at her. A few seconds later, she walks up to him and embraces him]
  • Linda Parker alias Linda Arnold: I'm sorry, Brad. I'm sorry I misjudged you. In my heart, I didn't want to believe it.
  • [Linda lays her head on Brad's shoulder as she continues to embrace him]
  • Brad Dunham: You're the first fine thing that's come into my life since the day I thought it was over.
  • [Linda looks up at Brad]
  • Brad Dunham: And I'm not gonna let you out of it.
  • [Brad returns the embrace as he and Linda share a kiss]
  • [at the hotel, Brad Dunham can be seen speaking with the desk clerk]
  • Hotel Desk Clerk: Yes, Mr. Dunham?
  • Brad Dunham: What's this rumor I hear about my having to give up my room.
  • Hotel Desk Clerk: [somewhat nervous] Well... uh, uh... I... it's a... clerical error, Mr. Dunham. We won't say any more about it.
  • Brad Dunham: See that you don't.
  • [Dunham turns and walks off]
  • [at the hotel, Linda Parker and Brad Dunham can be seen having dinner together]
  • Brad Dunham: Enjoy your dinner?
  • Linda Parker alias Linda Arnold: It was wonderful. I love Chinese food.
  • Brad Dunham: This is the one place in Shanghai where you can get the kind of Chinese dish you only get back in the States.
  • [Linda smiles as she and Brad look at the orchestra to listen to the music they're playing]
  • [at the club, Brad Dunham can be seen enjoying a dinner with Linda Parker]
  • Brad Dunham: Like to dance, Miss Arnold?
  • [Linda appears transfixed with the music the orchestra is playing]
  • Brad Dunham: Would you like to dance, Miss Arnold?
  • [Linda turns and looks at Brad as she realizes he was speaking to her]
  • Linda Parker alias Linda Arnold: [smiles] Oh, I'd love to.
  • [the two of them both stand up from the table they're sitting at and proceed to join the rest of the guests in dancing]
  • [at a club, Linda Arnold and Brad Dunham can be seen dancing together]
  • Linda Parker alias Linda Arnold: I've forgotten that people can have fun.
  • Brad Dunham: I'd sort of forgotten, too.
  • [at a club, Brad Dunham can be seen dancing with Linda Arnold]
  • Brad Dunham: It's hard to believe that you're a social service worker.
  • Linda Parker alias Linda Arnold: Why?
  • Brad Dunham: [smiles] You dance too well.
  • Linda Parker alias Linda Arnold: [smiles in return] Thank you.
  • [at a club, Linda Parker is seen dancing with Brad Dunham]
  • Linda Parker alias Linda Arnold: I like dancing. Do you dance a great deal?
  • Brad Dunham: [smiles] No, but from now on, I will.
  • [at the school Linda Arnold works at, Brad Dunham can be seen interacting with a young girl named Mia, who begins to hold Dunham's hand]
  • Mia - Orphan Girl: Thank you for playing with us, Mr. Dunham.
  • Brad Dunham: That's okay, sweetheart.
  • Mia - Orphan Girl: Are you coming back again, Mr. Dunham?
  • Brad Dunham: Try and keep me away.
  • [at the docks, Brad Dunham can be seen speaking with the Captain of a ship]
  • Brad Dunham: What happened?
  • Ship's Captain: We were in the outer harbor, signalling for clearance to enter, when there was a burst of machine gun fire.
  • Brad Dunham: Go ahead.
  • Ship's Captain: The first burst killed the helmsman, and got me in the arm. Then, they hopped to and come aboard, six of them. I did what I could.
  • Brad Dunham: I'm not blaming you. Recognize any of the men?
  • Ship's Captain: It was too dark, and it happened too fast. When I came to, they were adrift, and the cargo had been taken up.
