Walter Lantz had made one shot shorts before and after this one, and typically they hit the mark and some were really good. "papoose on the loose" is not one of them. Before getting into the mud, here's the good things about the short. The characters have decent personalities, with Papoose being cute and very appealing, at least in design. The backgrounds and settings are also nice, with appealing colors. Some of the animation is also well done, particularly the scene where the bear looks at Papoose with the moose horn. His face there is really funny. Music is also solid, Clarence Wheeler I feel did the best job as a musician at the studio. Now onto the bad. First off, Papoose and his dad just don't work well together here. The father is WAY to sympathetic as a character, and this makes Papoose feel like an actual murderer. Not only that, but the voice of Papoose is genuinely annoying. Daws Butler does his Chilly Will voice here, but it just doesn't work. The ending especially where Papoose won't shut up and acts completely oblivious to the suffering of his father is the most aggravating part of this short. This cartoon actively annoyed me, is not just because of how mean Papoose was towards his dad. Nothing here is funny asides from a few gags here and there, but overall this is an EXTREMELY lousy effort from Paul J. Smith.
