The Terrytoons are oddly interesting, mainly for anybody wanting to see (generally) older cartoons made by lesser known and lower-budget studios. They are a mixed bag in quality, with some better than others, often with outstanding music and with some mild amusement and charm and variable in animation, characterisation and content.
1934 was again a hit and miss year for Terrytoons, some decent ones, some average ones, some lacklustre ones and some bad ones. Of which 'The Three Bears' is among the best. Not exceptional and never will be one of my all time favourites (there are even better versions of this timeless story) but a very nice inoffensive way to pass the time. Summing it up, it's decent and well above average.
Best asset is the music, which predictably is incredible. It is so beautifully and cleverly orchestrated and arranged, is great fun to listen to and full of lively energy, doing so well with enhancing the action. Some of the backgrounds are detailed and ambitious enough and it's suitably elaborate. Synchronisation is pretty neat.
There is, like the best Terrytoons, a natural and never unforced natural charm, there are many gags that are amusing and sharp and a lively pace. The characters are appealing enough with a nice chemistry.
However, outside of the backgrounds, the animation is pretty crude.
While hard to dislike, like a lot of Terrytoons, it lacks freshness, is occasionally a bit too saccharine and can be choppy in transitions.
Overall though, nice cartoon. 7/10 Bethany Cox
