Nice Guys Sleep Alone

"Nice Guys..." tells of a 30-something male school teacher who is frustrated with dating because he follows the rules and always strikes out. Well, almost always. This little "sleeper" offers a fresh, honest, and amusing look at the foibles of first dates, doesn't try to out do itself, and knows when to quit. No blockbuster but an enjoyable watch worth renting.

Surprisingly funny and heartfelt, this is a nice story about two people who've lost faith in love. The rom-com is set in Kentucky, a refreshing change from the seemingly endless New York- and LA-based films of the same genre. Despite my unfamiliarity with the cast, I thought they were all very strong. A good find!

Okay, I was drawn to this movie by the upheaval that my roommate caused when posting a poor review of this movie on this database. My roommate and I are polar opposites, and once again, this trend holds true. I loved the movie. After a second viewing, my roommate resent her original comment that this movie was one of the worst pieces of cinema she had ever viewed, but said that she was still bothered by the stereotypes of Kentuckians. While every view is valid, I just don't agree. (Please note that my roommate isn't even a native Kentuckian.) I loved seeing the Kentucky shots. It was a little piece of home right there on the screen. I love the characters, the message, and found it incredibly entertaining. I've seen it numerous times. Way to go Stu!

This movie is about the pre-dating period. Where people are analyzing each other to see if it is worth while to date after all. I guess everyone can identify with this movie. The nice guy "Carter William Sanderson" Sean O' Bryan (Frankie and Johnny ) is self doubting his own dating strategies. His friend " Pat " Blake Steury thinks that he has all the answers but his advice proves to be wrong but harmless. This movie is funny and I recommend it. Very funny. My favorite scenes: the two friends talking in the horse races. Everyone would like to have friends like that. The group of students watching horses in the stall.

Director Stu Pollard did an excellent job in capturing the worst about dating, especially for nice guys. With so very few true gentlemen left women begin to expect less from their boyfriend and more from their friends. Therefore, the ones who actually do measure up end up being put into the "higher than boyfriend" category of friend.

I was always stunned with the response of "you are they kind of guys women marry, but not date." Carter's confusion and frustration have been felt by many, unfortunately there aren't too many Maggies in the world either. A woman who truly appreciates a romantic, traditional, gentleman, without practicing wedding vows over the first date.

Besides a few improvements that will come from another project, Stu Pollard should be praised on his first feature length film. The Louisville area was shot beautifully, the race scenes at Churchill downs, the horse farms, and the cityscape and local charm of many local hot-spots was an added bonus for anyone familiar with Louisville.
