Lucas is taken to the mill to learn the business of carpet making. He is later told by his uncle that as from the next day he will have a friend to keep him company.

Lucus learns how Sir Randolph came to own the mill and is disappointed when he discovers that his new friend is a girl. Meanwhile there is trouble at the mill when the workers learn that their wages are to be halved.

With the trouble at the mill quashed by the militia, Sir Randolph faces a bill for 20 years of unpaid taxes.

Lucas witnesses an attack at the mill but cannot get anyone to believe him. Meanwhile Sir Randolph hatches a plan to prevent the bailiffs from taking Midnight Court from him.

With Midnight Court destroyed by fire and Mr Oakapple in hospital, Lucas and Anne-Marie need to find somewhere to live.

Having found lodgings with Towzer's sister, Kazia, Lucas and Anne-Marie need to find work to pay their way.

Lucas learns about "toshing" when he goes down the sewers with Gudgeon the tosherman.

Lucas starts to suspect that working with Gudgeon may not be such a good idea, and Anne-Marie is having problems with the other girls who collect cigar butts.

Lucas and Anne-Marie discover that the witch who lives in the ice house is in fact Lady Murgatroyd, Anne-Marie's grandmother.

Lady Murgatroyd reveals that Mr Oakapple was a close friend of Anne-Marie's father and lost his fingers saving his life. Meanwhile Gudgeon's behaviour is becoming more erratic.

When Lucas does not return from Toshing, Lady Murgatroyd and Anne-Marie set out to look for him. They find that Gudgeon has gone insane and Lucas close to death. At the mill, Anne-Marie's life is in danger.

Lady Murgatroyd discovers the truth behind how Sir Randolph won the wager and Midnight Court. Meanwhile, at the mill Bob Bludward makes plans for Anne-Marie.

Bob Bludward's plans for Anne-Marie to have an accident are foiled and the mills future is decided.
