From a five minute film, it is hard to judge if there is greatness. Would you make the connection between this and "Valerie and her Week of Wonders", or much else during the Czech New Wave? I think not.

There is a little bit of clever misdirection. The film is called "Uncle" but really focuses more on a thief. Perhaps it should have been called "Thief"? But that would be too obvious.

Criterion has released this short on their Blu-Ray for "Valerie", and it is certainly worth watching. How many Czech films were there in 1959? Probably many, but most are unknown today. Revive the memory by checking this out. Surely you have five minutes to spare.
