    Hercules vs. the feminists

I rewatched this after remembering it from my childhood and I loved it. Hercules and Iolaus are total bosses, strolling through the world without a single care, kicking asses, men admiring them and women falling for them. Usually I despise the strong powerful female garbage they cram into every modern movie, but back then this was at least portrayed as a ridiculous caricature in the form of the Amazons. The movie basically preaches a positive message of unity between the sexes, instead of division.

Great start to a great series

When I was eleven, in 1994, television was my life and books on the Greek myths were my obsession. I must have seen this episode five times back in '94. Each time, I felt very sad by the end. It was a great story, and "Hera" looked so evil & chilling. I won't ruin it by telling you the end. But the story is basically of a town Hercules has to save from constant attacks from Amazon women. Sounds boring, but trust me it isn't, it has a lot of fighting action! Lucy Lawless (who later appears in the "Hercules" spinoff "Xena: Warrior Princess") guest stars here. It is also an honor to have the infamous Anthony Quinn playing the role of Zeus.

After Almost Thirty Years, Still a Delightful Adventure

Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) returns home to visit his mother Alcmene (Jennifer Ludlam) and to the wedding of his best friend Iolaus (Michael Hurst). Out of the blue, the villager Pithus (Lloyd Scott) arrives asking for help to Hercules to defeat monsters that are attacking his distant village. Hercules travels with Iolaus to fight the monsters and soon they learn that they are indeed Amazons controlled by the evil Hera.

"Hercules and the Amazon Women" (1994) is still a delightful adventure after almost thirty years. Yesterday I saw this entertaining film again, which is based on mythological gods and demigods, and it has not aged. Even the special effects are still good for a TV movie. Kevin Sorbo is excellent in this role. Unfortunately, these Hercules' films have been only released on VHS in Brazil. My vote is seven.

Title (Brazil): "Hércules e as Amazonas" ("Hercules and the Amazons")

    piece of crap

I cant understand why anyone would watch this for more than a few minutes. I sat and laughed at the truly horrible dialogue until I couldn't stand any more and switched to something else.

Costumes were designed along the lines of Dallas cheerleaders outfits: Design premise: lets show as much female flesh as we can . .the heck with historical accuracy or even common sense.

In fact the ONLY reason I can think anyone would watch this is for the female eye-candy. My advice: turn off the sound, put on a nice CD and enjoy.

Anthony Quinn needed a better agent. Sad to see him stoop so low. He should have gotten involved in something more fitting: commercials selling airline seats or perhaps pizza.

A Fun and Adventurous Mythological Romp

Hercules and the Amazon Women is an entertaining and enjoyable film that brings Greek mythology to life in a fun and lighthearted way. Starring Kevin Sorbo as the legendary hero Hercules, the movie takes us on an adventure filled with action, romance, and mythical creatures.

The film's portrayal of the Amazon women is particularly intriguing, showcasing their strength and independence while also exploring the complexities of their society. The chemistry between Sorbo and the talented cast adds depth to the story, making the characters relatable and engaging.

While the movie may not have the most groundbreaking special effects or the most intricate plot, it delivers solid entertainment value. It's a great option for fans of mythology and those looking for a light-hearted adventure. Overall, Hercules and the Amazon Women is a decent watch that provides an enjoyable escape into the world of Greek mythology.

    • Trivia
Lucy Lawless originally auditioned for the role of the Amazon Queen. Producer Eric Gruendemann said about the audition tapes that she had a power, a presence, and maturity despite only being 25 years old. However, the producers, including Lucy's future husband, Rob Tapert, were reluctant to cast a Kiwi. The role eventually went to Roma Downey. Lucy, however, did get the role of Lysia, second-in-command to the Amazon Queen. Source: Hercules The Legendary Journeys, The Official Companion by Robert Weisbrot. Pages 125-126.
