Danny DeVito in Renaissance Man (1994)

Goofs

Renaissance Man

Edit

Continuity

During the awards ceremony, a close up of Pvt. Davis shows him in formation with other graduates to his left. Yet, when Colonel James walks up to Pvt. Davis to present him with his father's Silver Star, Pvt. Davis is standing at the end of the row of graduates with no one to his left (Colonel James approaches him on his left side).
The police car picking up Hobbs has only blue lights but the reflections show flashing red lights
When Hobb's is being handcuffed they show one arm being cuffed then a close-up shows the same arm being cuffed again then wide shot shows both cuffed.
The underlining under "OXYMORON" changes between when Bill first writes it and when he explains it to Montgomery.
SFC Cass is seen outside the classroom looking in while the soldiers are being disruptive but when the windows are visible from inside the classroom, no one is looking in.

Factual errors

When presenting any award, such as a medal, the officer presenting the medal NEVER goes to the person to be awarded unless that person is disabled or otherwise unable to move easily. Instead Pvt Davis would have been ordered "front and center" in front of the Colonel to be presented his father's Silver Star Medal.
If you're watching the movie with subtitles you will notice that, when one of the guys is impersonating Robert DeNiro in Raging bull, the subtitle says "impersonating Robert DeNiro". Later on however when the same guy is impersonating Scarface, the subtitle also say "impersonating Robert DeNiro". However a true fan will know that it is Al Pacino who is in Scarface.
The army would never allow recruits to leave base, especially without a superior like a drill sergeant, during basic training before graduation.
Dark victory is not an oxymoron.
The movie was filmed in 1994 and even if it were supposed to be of an earlier time it would have depicted sometime later than 1975, because BDU's had not replaced plain fatigues by that time.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

The Silver Star medal is actually a small silver star inside of a large gold star, so at first glance, it would appear Pvt. Davis received the wrong medal, but his medal was was the actual Silver Star.

Anachronisms

There would be no way that a local military base in the 1990s would have in its files the record of a Vietnam veteran killed in the 1960s. Such records would have been retired long beforehand to first the Army Personnel Branch (now known as HRC) and then the military records center in St. Louis. For that matter, as a closed record of a deceased veteran, there would be no drama in obtaining it as all that would have to happen would be to fill a form out by the next of kin, in this case the veteran's son.

Audio/visual unsynchronised

Near the end of the movie, Sergeant Cass is marching a new bunch of recruits, and the group of men are supposed to be singing the "Hamlet" cadence. However, although we can hear them, none of the men's lips are moving.

Character error

When Bill is first talking to the class about Hamlet, he asks if anyone had heard of William Shakespeare and was met with blank stares. The next day he tells the class all the parts on Shakespeare's plays were played by men, to which Miranda replies "Romeo and Juliet were a couple of guys?" If she didn't know who Shakespeare was, she wouldn't have known that play.
