Ghost in the Shell" (2017) is a live-action remake of the 1995 Japanese animated film of the same name, directed by Mamoru Oshii. Both films are based on Masamune Shirow's 1989 manga. The 2017 adaptation blends narrative and visual elements from the original anime, the manga, and later entries in the franchise such as 'Stand Alone Complex'. While it modernizes the story and recontextualizes it for a Western audience, it retains many of the core philosophical themes, including the nature of identity, artificial intelligence, and the merging of humanity with technology.
