actually you've got it wrong this film was first made in Tamil as Minsara Kanavu but due to its success it was dubbed in Telugu as Merupu Kalalu and Hindi Sapnay so thats why its the same as Sapnay , Sapnay is a dubbed version of Minsara Kanavu. The film was a Major success and the music won the music composer A.R Rahman Best Music Director award for the second time after the hit Roja, also Prabhu Deva won the Silver Lotus Award for Best Choreography . this film is a classic by any account and definitely worth a watch ...the music is heavenly and the acting by Kajol ,Arivind Samy and Prabhu Deva is filled with chemistry and connection ....a must see
I did watch this movie on DD/Podhigai channel on TV at midnight fully for the first time and I should really say that it still isn't that bad and was interesting enough and really got a bit of nostalgia. There are just very few movies like this that shows the initial stage of the development of love between couples and this is one of those gems that shows off the real facts, the music just elevates the whole film to a different level and watching it after listening to those songs for thousand times elevates it to a very different level.
I think this is the first movie where GVM was seen on screen, shot when he was an assistant for Rajeev Menon.
Still relevant, even after 20+ years, just fantastic.
Finally, a recent movie about Catholics that isn't bending to the RSS-supported negative stereotype! Perhaps that's because it was made in the south, another place not looked upon too kindly by Hindutvadis. Kajol wants to be a nun, not because of western brainwashing or because she wants to hide from the world (as in yeh zindagi ka safar), but because she feels drawn to God and sees the church's emphasis on social work as something she really wants to have a part in. (Also doesn't want the shackles of marriage.) She looks stunning, as always -- she outshines her cousin (Rani) everywhere she goes. She is loved first by Thomas (Aravindsami plus 30 lbs and a whole lot of whitening creams since Bombay 2 years earlier?) and then by Deva (Prabudeva), who was sent by Thomas to woo her in his stead (very Shakespearean). There is a breathtaking semi-salsa dance scene with Kajol and Prabudeva, where he really proves his talent. Kajol, loves the church, is loved by two men who are friends.... which will she choose? You are really kept in suspense until the end!
Isn't this the exact same movie as "Sapnay"? Made in the same year, same cast, character names and identical plot - one language and version for Tamil, the other for the rest of the country? Correct me if I'm wrong, but "Strawberry Ankhen" is in both films. I've seen this film, not Sapnay, and my vote mostly represents how much I love to watch Prabhu Deva dance. He doesn't have as many "electric" dances as he has in other films, most notably "Pehli Nazar ka Pehla Pyar: Love at first sight". The DVD version also does not have subtitles, which makes the other film attractive, I can follow in the spots I got lost in. It's a cute twist on "Cyrano de Bergerac".
"Vennilave" is the turning point of the film.
Each and every frame was engaging and that was the major reason for such a Great success!
Kajol's variation in acting was lit! Rajiv Menon u r a master!:)
