A minimal effort
In 2000, Paul and Joe, the creators of Recess (and also the key writers of "Rugrats" from 1991 to 1995, also known as the good era of "Rugrats", before Nick took over) realized that "Recess" is on its last legs before getting canceled by Disney (in other words, "Recess" was close to the 65th episode). So, they made another show, "Lloyd in Space". That turns out to be nothing more than some cheap-ass (sorry) imitation of Recess with aliens, robots, and spaceships thrown into it. Lloyd, like TJ in "Recess", is just another misfit kid with misfit friends (except that Lloyd is not a schemer, unlike TJ and TJ is not a dork unlike Lloyd). Like in "Recess", the adults are treated like tyrants who make life tough for children by making rules and blowing off steam at them, and an example is Lloyd's mother, who is portrayed as strict on her kids (also, the robot teacher in school is strikingly similar to Mrs. Finster in "Recess"). Like in "Recess", there are characters on the show that are rich, popular, and gossipy bitches (sorry, again) that talk badly about Lloyd and his friends and that they think they're hot stuff and that their vocabulary is of barely anything more than "whatever", "totally", and "like..." (that blue alien bitch [sorry] is strikingly similar to Ashley A. in "Recess"). And heck, certain characters sound like characters in "Recess" (Lloyd sounds like Gus, Eddie sounds like Gelman [although Gelman is a bully on "Recess" and Eddie is not a bully], the robot teacher sounds like the secretary on "Recess" [I think her name is Mrs. Lemon], Douglas's mother sounds like Mrs. Grotke, and that that blue alien woman sounds like Ashley A.). If I hear people saying that this show is fresh and original, they have a very bad taste in entertainment. I give this a 5 out of 10
Contrary to popular belief, this is something special
Lloyd in space may fall into the category of your typical run of the mill cartoon, but that is not to say that this cartoon will disappoint. It won't. It has very likable characters that may look familiar, but its lead character is one of a kind. Lloyd has a lot to learn about himself and life in general. The interesting thing for kids is, Lloyd is experiencing his turbulent teen years in a world very unfamiliar to any of us. Lloyd has many adventures in space all the while learning very important life lessons. The first episode when Lloyd turns thirteen is very touching and insightful when he discovers just what being a man means. I think this is a cartoon all kids should watch.
Something Beautiful...
Words cannot describe how this formulaic, cliché farce about a green alien teen (and his daily struggles) makes me feel. Not since before the airing of "Fillmore" had Disney EVER put out something so captivating. Many have said that "Lloyd in Space" is basically just "Recess" in a different wrapper, but I beg to differ. Although Recess was a gem in it's own right, it didn't come across as having the same production quality as Lloyd in Space, or the same writing/acting quality (Yes, even voice-over actors can be bad). Although its not original (in any way, shape or form), "Lloyd In Space" carries a certain signature style, which I believe can NEVER EVER be duplicated (With exceptions held for "Paul & Joe", of course). I'd give anything to have a final episode placed in production, where every question us "Die-hard" fans have could be answered
best kid's show on tv
If you remember the glory days of Saturday morning cartoons (that would be the 70's), then this show will undoubtedly be a delight to you. Very well written, with interesting story lines (that aren't abandoned half-way through, like some other shows I won't bother to mention), and animation that is clear AND colorful. This is a clean, crisp, articulate show that makes this viewer 'nostalgia-satisfied'. Great job Disney, I hope you intend to try and duplicate this triumph!
This is Terrible!
Lloyd in Space is a very unfunny science-fiction cartoon. Although created by the same guys behind Recess, it comes off nowhere near as pleasing. And compared to such other sci-fi toons as Futurama, it has very inferior delivery.
This cartoon centers on a green alien who's just becoming a teenager, but is a little too eager to grow up. Lloyd himself isn't much of a likeable character, and the whole world seems to be against him much of the time.
The one thing about this cartoon that really bugs me is Lloyd's bratty little sister, Francine. She has teleknesis, and too often uses it at everybody's disadvantage, but none more than Lloyd's! Francine is such an annoying twit, and Lloyd's mom seems very oblivious as to how dangerous she can be at times. (Remember the babysitting episode?) And most of the time, she's just plain irritating. (How about the one where she loses her teleknesis?) Francine makes Lloyd's life a living hell, yet she feels sorry for herself when Lloyd says or does hateful things to her. Other times, Lloyd even sympathizes Francine when she gets in trouble. This is all thanks to that overly-moralistic atmosphere that infests if not all, most of the programs on the Disney Channel. Unlike most shows, this sibling rivalry is TOTALLY disturbing!
Most of the other characters, namely Lloyd's friends, are okay, otherwise mediocre. Lloyd in Space should get credit for creativity, but most of what comes from this cartoon (characters, writing, jokes, etc.) falls flat. It's primarily the sibling rivalry that ruins this cartoon. Also, this cartoon follows that same pseudo-teen formula that's being done by the likes of As Told By Ginger and Braceface.
Lloyd in Space is a definite failure. If you haven't seen it, or just don't want to, then you're doing yourself a HUGE favor!
