    • Trivia
In the 1880s, Jim Stacy was a postmaster in Calico, California, and his brother Alwin ran the general store at Bismarck mines, about a mile and a half away. Jim wanted to contact Alwin, so he sent his dog, Dorsey, with a message. The "Dog Delivery System" caught on with the miners, and one of the brothers devised a mail pouch for Dorsey, who continued to deliver mail between the two towns from 1883 to 1886. Dorsey was not renamed after the Postmaster General of the United States, because no one named "Dorsey" has held that office. In 1972, Kenny Roger's recorded the song "Dorsey, the Mail carrying Dog."
