    Rationality Be Damned

The character of Mark Greene is so complex. We have known him as the kind, sympathetic doctor, but in a couple seasons he has been beset by complications, including the beating he took. His work has also cost him his marriage.

Here he learns of his mother's accident and heads for home. Previously, we were made aware of his estrangement from his father. Here we are thrust into that situation when he finds his mother to be on the verge of loss of cognitive functions and dementia.

In the process he finally realizes that while he dislike his father, the man was a lot more than he thought.

We also are going to say goodbye to Cynthia who joined him there. It was obviously not to be, but it was a sad parting.

    • Trivia
This is the second episode in this fourth season to take place entirely away from the ER at County General. In this case, it involves Mark Greene visiting his parents in San Diego after his mother suffers a series of strokes.
    • Goofs
Mark empties his mother's portable toilet, rinses the bucket and puts it back. He then gives his mother her pills without washing his hands. As a doctor, he should know better.
    • Quotes

Ruth Greene: Dr. Black says that you and your father are responsible for your own feelings. But I know I started. I blamed him. I blamed you. I didn't want a baby. It was too soon. We'd only dated a couple of times. Of course, when I saw you, I loved you. And I tried to make up for it. But I'd already spoiled everything between you and your father. And it just kept going wrong, no matter how much I loved you both.
