I had watched ER sporadically when it first aired and like most people considered Kerry Weaver, like Dr. Romano, one of the main antagonists of the series. But now going back and watching the entire series 25 years later I've grown to really like Dr. Weaver and her character arc. She's become much more sympathetic and seeing her struggle to understand herself. The tragedy of losing her love, trying to keep her son and at the same time navigate her career as a healer and as an administrator has made her one of my favorite characters.
The struggle for people to accept their gay children for who they are is real and can happen at any age. For the most part Kerry has been accepted by her staff, but running into a brick wall with her birth mother - who she had been so eager to meet - was tragic as well. It's too bad there often is one or two sticking points that keep people from reconciling or coming together in the first place, and this episode did a great job illustrating that.
The ER cases were fun and it's good to see Sara Gilbert's character coming to the front as a competent student doc. Seeing how Weaver has to deal with immaturity of other doctors like Abby & her new squeeze, plus the surgeon help you understand why she is how she is.
