    Nurses and Doctors

Most of this episode seems to take place in the hospital versus in the firehouse. In fact, besides a short scene in the middle of the opposite, we don't really see much of the fire station.

Roy and Johnny are called to help a heart attack victim who had shot an robber, a woman who took diet pills not prescribed to her, and a man who had an accident at work. The doctors helped some of the above mentioned people, along with another man that was brought in unconsciously.

There are a couple tense scenes at the hospital involving Dr. Morton. The first incident involves his yelling at a nurse. Dixie McCall kindly but firmly makes sure he understand she does not approve. The second incident involves the patient brought in. Dr. Morton automatically assumes it is drug related so he can't see the truth. He must humbly apologize for his discrimination.

Johnny, as usual, is flirting. He thinks he'll get a date with the pretty nurse, but...

Why aren't all the actors identified?

Especially the children. Other shows list every cast member, especially if they have speaking roles. Even if it's one line someone should be credited. In this episode three are three boys. Since I was 10 years old in 1972 I'm interested in the actors that were kids back then.

Packrat1 mentions Mandy Patinkin and I agree! I wouldn't have recognized him on my own so thank you packrat1.

I enjoyed this episode. I didn't watch Emergency! Regularly as a child. We had one television and dad ruled the viewing lol.

I enjoyed googling the main characters. I knew who Robert Fuller was from watching old Wagon Train episodes.

    Mandy, is that you?

One of my favorite episodes. So many people aren't diagnosed or the correct treatment is delayed because the doctor won't consider something else beyond their initial opinion.

I really liked how the friend associated for the unconscious man and how forgiving he was toward the doctor.

And I'm pretty positive that's Mandy Patinkin as the unconscious victim. He'd have been about 20 years old. Check out old photos from those years.

Nurse Dixie was always so calm and professional in doing her job. She did as the doctor instructed, but also took initiative and made her opinion known. She didn't argue, but she was firm when needed.

This episode was early in the series and it gave us a glimpse of the various personalities of the characters. We didn't get to see Dr Early enough in this episode though. Bobby Troup was such a laid-back actor.

Interestingly, the "second deputy" was played by Vince Howard and not given a character name as yet. After numerous appearances, he was just called "Vince". Another no nonsense favorite character of mine.

    • Trivia
The man was most likely bit by a "Latrodectus Hesperus" or the western black widow. Only the female of the species can bite humans. Black widow bites are almost never fatal and rarely cause permanent damage to healthy people. Young children and the very old are at the most risk. They avoid humans and only attack if they are threatened or protecting their egg sacs. Muscle cramps and nausea are the most common symptoms along with chest pain.
    • Goofs
Dr. Morton is convinced that the hippie he is treating is suffering from a heroin overdose, stating he is comatose, has dry skin, no pupil reaction and shortness of breath. While some of these are the symptoms of an opioid overdose, dry skin is not one of them; excessive sweating is a common side effect of opioids, someone with an overdose would have very clammy and cold skin. Additionally opioid overdose patient's skin becomes pale and cyanotic (turns blue from lack of oxygen) on extremities like the nose, lips, cheeks, fingers and toes; this patient's skin is a normal, healthy color. Symptoms of unconsciousness, dry skin, no pupil reaction and shallow breathing are all common to a number of things besides an overdose including severe concussion, stroke, severe dehydration and exposure to a neurotoxin just to name a few.
