A Hilarious Dive into High School Chaos

Story - 8/10 In Let's Go to the Hop, Peter infiltrates a high school when a bizarre toad-licking craze takes over the student body. The plot is wild from the get-go, with Peter diving headfirst into the ridiculousness of high school culture. While the premise might seem a bit outlandish, it's a perfect setup for Family Guy's signature mix of absurd humor and social commentary. The episode does a great job at poking fun at teenage fads and the lengths people will go to just to fit in. It's not groundbreaking, but it's certainly entertaining, with plenty of laughs throughout.

Character Focus - 8/10 Peter's antics take center stage here, with him posing as a high school student to investigate the toad-licking phenomenon. His usual level of childish energy is put to hilarious use as he interacts with the kids. While Peter is the obvious star, we also get some nice moments from Lois and the rest of the family, even though they don't take on as much screen time. Stewie and Brian's sideplots are minor but add some fun, and it's clear that this episode thrives when it focuses on Peter's larger-than-life personality. The dynamic of the Griffin family plays off well against the exaggerated high school setting.

Humor - 8/10 This episode delivers the kind of off-the-wall humor that Family Guy is known for. The toad-licking craze is a hilarious and absurd idea, allowing the show to play with high school tropes in a completely over-the-top way. The cutaway gags are sharp as ever, especially with Peter's out-of-touch antics in the school setting. From bizarre conversations with the students to his increasingly ridiculous attempts to blend in, the humor is fast-paced and absurdly funny. While some of the jokes are a bit on the nose, the sheer unpredictability of the episode makes it a lot of fun.

Animation - 8/10 The animation in Let's Go to the Hop is solid, with some standout moments when Peter is interacting with the high school kids. The designs for the school setting and the students are exaggerated enough to make the whole high school world feel both familiar and strange. The toad-licking craze is particularly well-animated, with characters reacting in increasingly exaggerated ways that enhance the humor. The animation complements the episode's off-the-wall humor by delivering the absurdity in a visually engaging way.

Pacing and Direction - 8/10 The pacing is brisk, with the main story moving quickly through Peter's high school infiltration. The episode never lingers too long on any one joke, keeping the laughs rolling. The balance between Peter's absurd high school experience and the minimal sideplots keeps the episode moving at a nice clip. The direction is sharp, using the fast pace to build energy and absurdity, ensuring the jokes land without feeling too rushed. There's a nice flow between the chaotic high school scenes and the quieter moments with the rest of the Griffin family.

Conclusion - 8/10 Let's Go to the Hop is a thoroughly enjoyable episode of Family Guy, combining absurd humor with a fun premise that takes Peter into the ridiculous world of high school fads. The humor hits its mark with rapid-fire jokes and memorable cutaways, while the animation adds another layer of fun. Peter is at his best here, with his antics in the high school environment providing some classic Family Guy laughs. It's not the deepest episode, but it's certainly a highly entertaining one that captures the spirit of the show at its best.

    • Trivia
There is an opening sequence where two "Columbian Cartel Delivery" pilots jump out of a plane. They are both speaking Spanish, but the subtitles are in Korean (which obviously, IS the joke!). According to the DVD commentary, the dialogue translates to: First man - "Oh my God, we're going to die!", Second man - "Did I remember to close the garage door this morning?"
    • Goofs
The "Spanish" spoken by the Colombians was barely understandable for Spanish speakers.
