Look at Yourself In the Mirror Top Dog

I am a Nigerian woman and I have read and studied what African Americans went through to get equal rights and end segregation. It especially broke my heart reading about Ruby Bridges, who because of her skin colour, parents withdrew their children from the elementary school, all the teachers except one refused to teach her and she had to be taken to school and taken home every day by four federal marshals for her protection. Therefore I was furious with the President of the fraternity Will and Carlton wanted to join. True, Carlton is sheltered and privileged but he represents how far Civil Rights had gone- how many boys before he was born were allowed to go to a top class prep school? The idea of rising through your humble beginnings and work hard is to make a better life for yourself, not look down on those who have and then call them sell outs. People like Top Dog will blame white people, saying they are the ones holding the black man down, when in fact it's people like him who are guilty of it! A very good episode.

The Ending of this makes you think and sad

The boyz Will and Carlton are pledging and get a chance to go through all of the usual hoops in a fun and hilarious ways that we come to know the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. I love the point that is made in the ending because it is one every African-American such as myself can learn and tell to other AA's. Much love!

    • Trivia
The Steppers are all members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, and part of the Southern California All-Star Step Team. This is the same fraternity as Actor Hill Harper, Hall of Fame Football Player Charles Haley, and Martin Luther King, Jr to name a few. Will and Alfonso even tried to learn some of their steps between takes. The addition of Stepping to the episode made it one of the more popular episodes of 1993 as well as the series.
    • Goofs
In one episode Carlton says his house is across the road from the Aaron Spelling mansion, but in a later episode, Uncle Phil says that Aunt Viv has gone round to the Aaron Spelling mansion next door.
    • Quotes

Carlton: How dare you not take Will. He's full of potential!

Top Dog: That's why we want him. It's you we don't want.

Carlton: Me? But I did everything! I cooked, I cleaned, I hand-washed your toilets...

Top Dog: Everything your butler does for you. I'm not accepting no prep school, Bel-Air bred sellout into my fraternity.

Will: [stepping forward] Homie, you can stop all that...

Carlton: No, wait, Will. I got this one.

      [turns back to Top Dog]

Carlton: You think I'm a sellout, why? Because I live in a big house or I dress a certain way? Or maybe it's because I like Barry Manilow.

Will: [to the crowd] Uh, he meant Barry White, y'all.

Carlton: Being black isn't what I'm trying to be, it's what I am. I'm running the same race and jumping the same hurdles you are, so why are you tripping me up? You said we need to stick together, but you don't even know what that means. If you ask me, you're the real sellout.
