Lt. Philip Gerard
- Dr. Richard Kimble: [in his cell, talking through the bars to Gerard] You make yourself believe that being a fugitive has done something to my mind. You're forgetting that my story's exactly the same now as it was the night of the murder.
- Lt. Philip Gerard: And it was and is a lie.
- Dr. Richard Kimble: [angrily] Are you so godlike that because you couldn't find a one-armed man you don't believe he exists?
- Lt. Philip Gerard: I've done everything humanly possible to find him!
- Dr. Richard Kimble: [studies Gerard for a moment] I think you have. I wonder why.
- Lt. Philip Gerard: It's my job.
- Dr. Richard Kimble: It's also a curse, isn't it, Gerard? You know, I think you have nightmares too. Your nightmare is that when I'm dead you'll find him.
- [Gerard's jaw tightens slightly, then he turns to leave]
- Dr. Richard Kimble: What are YOU running from, Gerard?
- Wilma Springer: Lieutenant... did he kill his wife?
- Lt. Philip Gerard: The law says he did.
- Wilma Springer: That's not what I mean. Did he really kill her?
- Lt. Philip Gerard: The law says he's guilty. I enforce the law.
- Wilma Springer: What's right is right.
- Lt. Philip Gerard: I suppose you could put it as simply as that.
- Wilma Springer: I have. All my life.
- Dr. Richard Kimble: It's all very easy for you, Gerard, black and white.
- Lt. Philip Gerard: Yes, it has to be. Which gives you the advantage. Any disguise you choose. Hero to a whole town.
- Dr. Richard Kimble: Saving kids from a burning bus. That's a disguise.
- Sheriff Al Springer: Did he eat much, Ernie?
- Deputy Ernie: A little.
- [Gerard inspects the food tray that has just come from Kimble's cell]
- Deputy Ernie: Oh don't worry, Lieutenant. I made sure he didn't keep the spoon.
- Lt. Philip Gerard: [Smiling] Hardly the suicide type.
- [in a nightmare sequence, Richard Kimble is cornered in an alley by Lt. Gerard]
- Lt. Philip Gerard: [betraying sadistic pleasure as he draws his gun] Finally, Kimble. Finally.
- Narrator: [as Kimble looks at Gerard in terror] This is Richard Kimble's recurring nightmare, and each time he awakens he wonders if he will awaken in the greater nightmare of reality.
- [Gerard shoots Kimble, which startles him awake, back in reality]
