    The Mystery of Chilton Tuition

I find it hilarious-and a bit shocking-that people on forums and Reddit dissect Lorelai's remark about the Chilton tuition as though there are only two possible numbers on the table: $5,000 or $50,000. Let's revisit what Lorelai actually says on the phone: "There are too many zeroes after that 5." Folks, the possibilities are clearly more nuanced: $5,000, $15,000, $25,000, $35,000...

Here's the logic: Richard hands Lorelai a check for $75,000. Lorelai uses it to pay off the debt she owes Emily for three years of Chilton, which means the tuition logically comes out to $15,000 per year. That adds up to $45,000 in total, leaving $30,000 from the check to cover Yale tuition. This figure aligns pretty closely with what an elite private school in the area would realistically cost.

Now, throw in the termite infestation (for which Lorelai had to take out a loan), the loss of Yale's financial aid due to declaring the $75,000 check, and it's easy to see why Lorelai and Rory are strapped for cash. And let's not forget: any spare savings were earmarked for their backpacking trip through Europe.

The numbers may be approximate, but to those who find joy in accusing the writers of bad math-relax. They know what they're doing. Still not convinced? Consider this: the initial payment Lorelai was planning to make for Yale was likely just for the first semester. Right?

    Case closed, Reddit detectives!

    • Quotes

Dave Rygalski: I stayed up all night. I read the entire Bible cover to cover. I don't know what it means.

      Mrs. Kim: David.

Dave Rygalski: You have to tell me what it means. Is it yes, is it no? I can't feel my right elbow anymore. I don't even know why, but I can't.

      Mrs. Kim: David.

Dave Rygalski: Please, just tell me. I'm so tired.

Mrs. Kim: It's not from the Bible.

      Dave Rygalski: What?

Mrs. Kim: It's Shakespeare, Henry VI. I like to goof off now and then, too, you know.

      Dave Rygalski: Shakespeare.

Mrs. Kim: That is a very difficult thing to do, reading the Bible in one night. I myself have only done it three times.
