"Florida's Big Gig" finds James optimistic about his latest job interview at a department store, while Florida laments missing an opportunity to work in Willona's boutique. James is certain that Ms. Rogers (Charlotte Rae, later in THE FACTS OF LIFE) will hire him on, only to learn that her supervisor, Lynn Bridges (Dick O'Neill), would rather hire Florida for the sales position, giving in to two minorities at once. James insists that his wife accept, while he goes back to the car wash: "the flying foot of fate done caught me in the same place as usual!" Nothing she says can assuage his bitterness, until she reveals that she was fired after only three days.
