    JJ's 18th birthday

"JJ Becomes a Man" finds the Evans family planning to celebrate JJ's 18th birthday in style, $75 in new art supplies. JJ enters with news of a new job as a delivery boy where salary is unimportant, something his father knows only too well: "that's what they been telling me all my life, and they prove it by what they pay me!" James is chagrined to learn that the department store's new computer system renders his credit nonexistent: "right now I couldn't get credit in an Eskimo trading post on a used igloo!" Passing 'from boyhood into adultery,' JJ is stunned to receive a sweater for a gift rather than the paint and brushes he expected, but he thanks everyone before leaving for a date. Stymie Beard makes his third of four appearances as James' buddy Monty, interrupting the festivities with news of JJ's arrest for holding up a liquor store.
