    Florida's 2nd Marriage!!!

Carl Breaks Up With Florida In Episode 23, Then He Proposes To Her In This Last Episode Of Season 4, Then They Get Married, & Then They Move To Arizona For A Year Because Of Carl's Cancer!!!!

    Esther Rolle exits the series

"Love Has a Spot on His Lung" concludes the fourth season, Carl Dixon (Moses Gunn, last of six) brings home a hungover JJ, his worried mother angry with him for breaking off their relationship. Carl confides the reason why he did what he did, a visit to the doctor that shows lung cancer. He plans on selling his repair shop and leaving town after his operation, and entrusts Florida to tell the children. Carl receives a shock when Bookman reveals that he himself underwent the same operation five years before, giving Johnny Brown a chance to do his John Wayne impression. In the end Florida goes ahead and marries Carl, heading out West with him and leaving her family behind. Script wise, it made no sense for such a good Christian woman to run off with the first man to propose so soon after her husband's death, but Esther Rolle remained unhappy with the JJ character, only coaxed back after a year away.

    • Trivia
Esther Rolle decided to leave the show because she felt the character of J.J. was a bad role model for young African-Americans. Florida was written out in this episode by having her marry Carl Dixon and move away with him. Rolle would return in the sixth season, however, Carl was never mentioned again.
