    Weird episode

The episode features Florida's brother suddenly coming to visit, because James is «"away." Honestly, the episodes don't feel the same when the dad is not in the episodes. The uncle coming to visit is so strange and sudden. I wished they used a different actor to play the uncle, because he had played Thelma's boyfriend in another episode. It just felt funny, even though it's only a show. I get it. But viewers never forget.

From Thelma's boyfriend to Thelma's uncle

Guest starring the always watchable Lou Gosset. He was more believable as an uncle to Thelma, as opposed to her boyfriend (in a season 2 episode). This was the second episode in a row, without John Amos. The story of Michael getting low grades and into fights seemed to require the presence of Amos' character. Having Gosset appear, as Florida's brother, seemed like another actor was being tested for John Amos' role. This was close to the time Amos would depart the show, and there was no logical reason for James not to be in this episode. Overall, the story is well done. Gosset comes on a little strong, and Norma Donaldson is very classy as Michael's teacher.

Lou Gossett as Florida's brother Wilbert

"Michael's Big Fall" guest stars Lou Gossett (previously seen as "Thelma's Young Man") as Uncle Wilbert, Florida's younger brother from Detroit, filling in for the absent John Amos. Wilbert usually shows up when James is away, with everyone worried about Michael's late afternoons, JJ believing it's a girl and Wilbert figuring he's only studying for a future destined for the Supreme Court. Michael returns home with his report card, not intending for his mother to see it. Even worse, the Jenkins family pays Florida a most unpleasant visit, to request that her son stop beating up on their 'straight A' brat. That and cutting class just isn't in Michael's nature, so Florida and Wilbert talk to his teacher Mrs. Baker (Norma Donaldson), who questions how much they drive the boy to reach a goal that he might not feel he's ready for. Lou Gossett was a fine replacement for John Amos, sadly making his second and last appearance on the show.
