    Catherine Lee Smith as JoAnn

"A Loss of Confidence" finds JJ instantly smitten with Thelma's classmate Jo Ann Taylor (Catherine Lee Smith), the high school homecoming queen, who was already impressed by his paintings. While studying French, JJ offers her a tip on foreign tongues: "never speak it in English!" Florida believes that JJ's ego comes from his handsome father: "you blow so many horns you could be the whole brass section for Count Basie!" Jo Ann shoots down every offer of a date from JJ, leaving him a shadow of his former ebullient self. Even his chicken delivery job suffers as a result, until Jo Ann returns to apologize, admitting that she's never gone out with such an intelligent artistic type, virtually a 'creative genius!'
