Hypertension gets your blood pressure up

"The Check Up" opens with the family worrying about James, who has been coming home in a foul mood lately. Michael reads up on the subject of hypertension aka high blood pressure, the leading cause of death among black people, hoping that their father doesn't suffer from it. A shorter temper and instant magnification of molehills into mountains are coupled with the wanton destruction of a worn out kitchen chair, prompting JJ's famous quip: "I'm sure glad he didn't get upset!" Finally convinced to have a check up, the doctor (Dean Santoro) confirms that it's not hypertension, just an excess of cholesterol, so everyone can relax.

Trivia
When Florida says, "When I was a maid... I was the best damn maid there was," she may have been alluding to Florida Evans' role as the maid on Maude (1972). The audience reaction certainly indicates this.

Goofs
When James is sitting at the kitchen table with his beer, he tells J.J. to bring him some aspirin. Right after J.J. goes to get it, James lifts his beer and the generic slip cover momentarily slides up off the can, revealing an actual Schlitz beer can underneath.
