    Austin Pendleton as Donald Hargrove

"The I.Q. Test" finds the Evans family preparing for Michael's 8th grade graduation party, with JJ expecting his date Henrietta to be there: "she's the hot sauce on my ribs!" Everything comes to a halt when Michael returns home with a low score on his I.Q. test, and a notice suggesting that he go to trade school. When pressed he admits that he walked out and didn't finish it, due to the nature of the questions being unfair to black students, or Hispanic, or other minorities. After comparing this white test to a comparable black one, James and Florida speak to the man who gave Michael the test, Donald Hargrove (Austin Pendleton), who has a penchant for playing with his computer adding machine. Faced with a series of questions familiar to ghetto life, Hargrove's superiority complex is soundly defeated by the proud Evans parents, as James explains: "how you gonna know where I'm at if you ain't been where I been, understand where I'm coming from?"

    • Trivia
Donald Hargrove was playing with a desktop calculator, which depending on the model, cost around $100 in 1974 (over $500 in 2019 dollars), which is why he wouldn't let anyone else touch it and was cradling it like a baby when it short circuited.
    • Goofs
After James tells J.J. his membership in the family is getting shakier by the minute, Florida says "Michael...come here", and motions for him to move from the chair to the couch next to her. The actor begins moving when she calls his name, but before she finishes her line or motions for him to come over.
    • Quotes

Florida Evans: [J.J. painted a picture of Michael] Why'd you paint him in a nightgown?

James 'J.J.' Evans, Jr.: That's no nightgown, that's a Supreme Court judge's robe.

      Florida Evans: Why's it purple?

James 'J.J.' Evans, Jr.: That purple symbolizes something.

James Evans, Sr.: What's it symbolize?

James 'J.J.' Evans, Jr.: It symbolizes that I ran out of black paint.
