Not as bad as the previous non-Green Acres in Hawaii

The worst Green Acres episode, by far, was 'Hawaiian Honeymoon' aired the previous week, and like this episode, it was meant to be a pilot, Richard L. Bare had wisely not directed them, Jay Sommers got roped into writing them, and there was no supporting cast in either. Clearly, the production team knew they had been axed. I've thought about this episode for a long time as to how bad it really was, but it did co-star Elaine Joyce, who went on to have a great Broadway career and was sparkling in this episode, along with other veteran supporting actors. If this was a pilot, there just wasn't enough there to develop a series from it; at least Star Trek's inserted pilot, 'Assignment:Earth' had strong ties to the existing Star Trek original series.

    Not too bad at all

Looking at this episode purely as an individual pilot rather than a regular episode of Green Acres it IS actually very enjoyable. Elaine Joyce plays the main role and I feel she is both likeable and brings a lot of energy to the episode. Richard Deacon is brilliant as always and it would have great to see him week after week had this pilot became a reality. It's also great to have Emmaline Henry once again on our screens in what could have been her next regular series since 'Jeannie'.

Looking at the negative aspects of this pilot, my main criticism is of the humour which is at times predictable and silly. I also think actor Cliff Norton should of been replaced as he is neither handsome, funny or entertaining and brings the show down a bit.

Incidentally, watching this reminded me a bit of "Here's Lucy" (which had already been on the air for 3 years).

Overall a entertaining pilot which should have got at least 13 episodes. 7 1/2 / 10.

    Terrible

I never saw this before and had trouble watching the whole thing. What were they thinking ?

    Redeemed by Elaine Joyce

Elaine Joyce was an attractive blonde who specialized in good-hearted ditzy women, the kind who cause trouble, make mistakes and get guys in trouble because they speak first (very fast but thankfully without the vocal fry many women speak in today) and think later. She enjoyed a very busy career and married well later on (Neil Simon). This was a potential pilot for a spinoff from Green Acres that went nowhere. Richard Deacon from Dick Van Dyke was her irritable boss and she was his receptionist. Elaine wears a sheer, skintight minidress that clings to her trim but shapely body like plastic wrap and a push-up and out bra, and bends over a lot. This alone is worth watching. Deacon is immune to her assets and just looks irritated by her behavior. In the second half, she changed into a terrible pantsuit outfit to get a check back from a con-man. Surprisingly, Elaine never got her own sit-com considering her roles and cheery personality on Love American Style, the Love Boat and other comedic TV shows plus the stage.

Last One Out Of Hooterville, Close The Barn Door

To any Green Acres fan, the saddest part about the last two episodes is watching the closing credits and realizing that none of the original supporting characters were involved, only actors who had no affiliation, and no ownership, to the program's original storyline.

Pilot or not, it was a disappointing way to close out the series.

    • Trivia
This episode aired on April 27, 1971, and was filmed out of order in December 1970. It was not really an episode of Green Acres (1965) as much as it was a 'back door pilot' for a series based on the characters around Mr. Douglas erstwhile secretary (who has developed her own backstory since working for him years before at his law firm in New York). As such, the Green Acres (1965) connection is a pretext to allow an introduction of the actors in the pilot. Either way, it failed. The pilot was not picked up by CBS and dropped in June 1971. The episode serves as a totally unrelated series finale for Green Acres (1965). Many series did not have finales. Especially prior to the 1980s when it became nearly required. This episode, according to insiders, was a throw away designed to act as a fill during the holidays or prior to summer hiatus. It ended up becoming the series finale when CBS canceled the series several weeks later. Green Acres (1965) wasn't hot, but was ranked #34 in 1971 and #50 in 1970. It had been moved to Tuesday for the last season. The cast and crew didn't know the series would be canceled. Had they known, perhaps a series finale would have been made. Knowing the writers, it would have been a really good one.
